The following information was sent in from Mary and Lloyd, long time dedicated Kauai volunteers. It's always good to have a little background information on our seals and as the population grows it's interesting to make the connections with seals we have heard or read about. Thank you Mary and Lloyd for sending the information about this little guy's family and the story behind his name.... and of course thank you for all you do! da blog lady
He was born November 27th, 2009. His mother was K12. He was her last pup, as she disappeared 2010. His older brother, I19, born 2004, was the first seal killed on Kauai in 2009. Culprit has not been found, but a large reward fund exists.
He was given his name "Mahalo Eha", by Kumu Sabra Kauka. "Mahalo" because of his birth being on Thanksgiving day, "Eha" because he was the fourth seal born on Kauai that year.
He has one surviving sister, RB24/25, "Haupu", and one surviving older brother, RV18/19.
He has had only one encounter with a cookie cutter shark....bitten under his chin. He healed nicely, really cannot see scar much.
