2-5-2013 DB's Dailies: Sadie,Buster&Kolohe@RI, Irma@KBP, Makaiwi&Kermit@WP, Duke@Molokai, KC@Police Beach, T21M@MCBH, M&M@KCG

All the TV news, as well as the paper have a NOAA/DLNR press release about the death of RK68, a 1 1/2 yr.old male, from the Big Island . He was transported to Oahu on Friday, from the Big Island, with respiratory problems. By now most of or all will have seen the story, but here is the on line SA release. It is yet another sad story in the Monk Seal World.

A really bad week for monk seals....  Unfortunately I think we are going to see more of this as the population on the main islands grow.  Personally, I believe the real work is ahead of us.... many folks have been out there for many years doing all they can to watch over our beloved critters. We need to continue this effort, but at the same time reach out to as many people we can, there is power in numbers.  We're going to see seals hooked over and over again, our best chance is to get folks to call it in... call it in as soon as possible.
You may have noticed in the TV news that another seal had a hook successfully removed from it's tongue and released. I looked up the animal, (RT12), and it turns out to be Rocky's son, from 2010.

On a happier note... at 0710 I found Irma (R010) snoozin' on the beach, along the roadside , just past Kaupo Beach Park. I cordoned her off, and she has remained the rest of the day. Irma departed at 1832.

At 0733, from Makai Pier, I found Sadie (RB12) snoozin' in the Morning Glory, just to the left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. At around 1000 she began to move down.

At 1036 Buster (RV08) began hauling out, 50 ft left of 1BS, on RI. Sadie saw him, and it appeared as though she was galumphing toward him, however she was headed for the Waimanalo end of the beach. Buster intersected with her along the way and both proceed to the water line. Both would enter the water, with Sadie in the lead at 1107.

At 1218 Kolohe (RW22) would haul out left of 1BS, and move up into the Morning Glory. He remained the rest of the day.

At 0740 Team Billand reported Makaiwi (R4DF) and Kermit (R012) together, fronting #1707, White Plains.

At 1119 the found R912 at the Makaha Surfside Condos.

Diane Pike called at 1134 with news that she had found my boy Duke (RA12), nestled amongst 3 others on Molokai. Seems like Sir Duke considers Molokai is home (away from home), glad Diane is there to look after the little guy.

Jen Christian called at 1145 with the report of KC (RK28) at Police Beach, on the North Shore.

Jen would call again at 1532 to advise that T21M remains at North Beach, on MCBH.

Team Billand found M&M (R020) at Kalaeloa Campground at 1809
