2-23-2013 DB's Dailies: Kaiwi,Kolohe,Mojo&Nani@RI, R018&Benny@Nanakuli, Ka'ena@KP, Noa@Maili Pt, R5AY@Pounders, Kermit@NIM, M&M@WP, U/U@EB

At 0700 I found Kaiwi (RK96) at the back of Rocky Right Beach, on Rabbit Island. She would later move down, and remained there the rest of the day.

At 0718 I found Kolohe (RW22) up in the Morning Glory, 40 ft left of 1BS, on RI. He would later move down and relocated to join Kaiwi at RRB at 1013, where he spent the rest of the day.

At 0931 Mojo (RI17) hauled out 100 ft left of 1BS. Kolohe would move down to check him out, and both would enter the water at 0952. Mojo would haul out again the the Waimanalo end of Left Point Beach, at 1020 , where he spent the rest of the day.

At 1052 Nani (RK60) would haul out 60 ft left of 1BS. She would remain the rest of the day.

At 0920, Spitting Cave fisherman, Brandon called me, and the Monk Seal Hotline to advise that he had possibly hooked "a small seal" while fishing at SC. He got a glimpse of the back of an animal, and felt his line play out, and suspected that he might have hooked the animal, but did not actually visualize a hooked animal. Ultimately his line broke. It appears that recent hooking stories on the news had affected him, and it speaks highly of Brandon that he reported the incident. The posse and myself were out there checking through the day, but did not locate a hooked animal. Tomorrow ????

At 1103 Dana called with the report of R018) at Nanakuli Beach Park. At 1108 she advised that Benny (RE74) had joined him. R018 would depart at 1310. Benny remained.

Marilyn & Lesley did their usual Saturday Ka'ena Point trek, and again as in recent days, Ka'ena (RO40) was the only resident at the end of the world.

The Billands had their Whale Hats on for half the day today. They called at 1150 to advise that Dera had reported an U/U near the canal at Ewa Beach. I've recieved on further word on that critter.

At 1404 Team Billand reported Noa (R6FI) at Maili Pt.

At 1450 Dana called with the report of an animal at Pounders, Laie. Sandra Kennedy would provide confirmation photos of R5AY. Her molt continues.

At 1545 the Billands found Kermit (R012) fronting #1945, Nimitz Cottages.

At 1606 they found M&M (R020) fronting #1708, White Plains.

Check the blog in the morning for the Billands shots.

Marilyn & I went by Nanakuli on our way back from monitoring Ka'ena PT to check on reported RO18
and a possible second seal. When we arrived there was only one seal and that was not RO18 due to the lack of tags, this one only had a chip.If it depended on what we were looking at Benny would have gone as U/M on the reports. He was rolled in sand, only a chipped tag barely visible and any kind of marks were hidden by sand. We found out later that he had been IDed earlier by the Billands
It was interesting to notice that there were several families on the beach all far away from him, a big "boys" BBQ going on up in the park. There was no disturbance, perfect scenario.
Aloha, Lesley

Thanks for backing me up on the I'd. The folks at Nanakuli were great! Talked story with all those great folks. They were happy supportive locals and wanted to hear about the seals. Did not meet a bad person. Thank u Lesley and Marilyn for going by.
