2-9-2013 DB's Dailies: Ka'ena @ KP, Makaiwi@Nimitz Cottages, Pohaku @ PC, Kermit@WP, RL42@Makaha, Ka'ena@KP, Kerby@Maili Pt

Despite many a mile, driven and trod by myself and posse people, today was one of those rare Nobody/Nowhere days in the SE quadrant. I was so desperate that I did a late afternoon retrace of the quadrant but finally had to admit that I been Skunktified !! INCONCEIVABLE !!!

Fortunately, others had a better day. Mrs. Whisperer nearly got skunked but she and Lesley, and others, did manage to find Ka'ena (RO40) at the end of the world.

Cianna called at 0706 reporting an animal at Nimitz Cove. The Billands responded and confirmed Makaiwi (R4DF) fronting 1777 Nimitz Cottages.

At 0709 the Billands found Pohaku (RO28) at Paradise Cove.

At 0747 Team Billand reported Kermit (R012) fronting #1708, White Plains.

Cianna called at 0959 with the report of "a small animal" in Makaha. Once again the Billands were on it, and at 1051 confirmed that it was RL42, foraging 50 ft off shore behind the Makaha Cabana Condos. She remained off shore, and moved further out, never hauling out. Beach individuals presented the usual problems.

At 1215 the Billands found Kerby (RW08) once again at Maili Point.

Cianna called at 1757 with the report of an animal just hauling out to the east end fence line at White Plains. The Billands responded immediately, but "the adoring hordes" ran the U/U off before the got there.

Cianna called again to advise that an animal had hauled out to Nimitz Cottages. Makaiwi departed.

When Barbara arrive the new animal had once again departed due to the adoring hordes.

The crowd was large, many little kids. Just Rob and I, no one else the entire time. We did our best at Plains, Nimitz, Makaha, etc.

Kermit remains, met the guy with the camera, tried to tell him, Makaiwi is around the other side, but, he just stayed with Kermit. He is in the photo of Kermits gathering crowd sitting on the sand.

Very disheartening with folks who ran off the U/U in the later afternoon. Rob tried to stop them, he couldnt even get an ID it happened SO FAST. Why folks like to toss sand and YELL at an ENDANGERED SEAL is SO WRONG.

Same seal tried to haul up at Nimitz also, about 30 folks out there...tried to hurry to make an id, but the seal left there too. Thanks to Gloria and John for trying to get the crowd back..you are appreciated. They are return CABIN VOLUNTEERS who helped us. Bless you. That seal galumphed up shore about 60 to 70 feet, then left area for good.

L42, that sweet innocent pup tried to haul up shore in Makaha, but a man blocked her entry way...she left, another guy swam with her. BAH!!!

Pohaku was found before 7am and we rushed to put the signs out immediately before the crowds arrived. Made all the calls then went to Plains to care for the seals out there. It gets quite nuts on weekends and holidays.

Kerby was alone, taking some huge waves...he clung on for dear life. He is amazing...they all are. I had to leave there, waves way to big for an old lady. I dont think Kerby was going to stay long.

It was pretty hot out there, much talking all day, we done the best we could with 6 seals again.

Oh and thanks to the KoOlina volunteers that went to help out...Allan, Linda, Sue and Sam...if I missed anyone, YOU KNOW WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE HELP.

And thanks to the volunteer who always sits with the seals for 6 to eight hours all the time...DEBBIE!!!! She sure takes a lot of crap from so many idiots. I always tell her, BE CAREFUL, dont take it in your own hands...BUT SHE DOES. God bless you DEBBIE...HUGS, BIG ONES. She covers the Makaha area, to yoks when a seal pops out on shore. JUST HER and some folks who meet her, get talking, then HELP HER AS WELL. She is one tuff cookie that DEBBIE.

Well, here comes the NEW DAY, our batteries are charged, our hearts are pumping with anticipation on who will show up on shore. Our courage, tucked in our soul...on ward to face the good people, the bad people and our precious, innocent Hawaiian Monk Seals.
