Melody went down to visit Kaiwi RK96 and PO5. She arrived mid morning and they were both sleeping on the beach by the Natatorium Wall. They both seem to be doing well. Melody was told the two had just come in from a swim. After their snooze Kaiwi turned to present for nursing, but PO5 was more interested in going for another swim. PO5 ran circles around mom for a while until she put up her hind flippers which might have been her way of saying "knock it off". The Pup stopped and laid next to her for a bit then slowly slithered down the sand to the water. Kaiwi finally

gave up and she headed out into the water with PO5 following behind. Kaiwi took the kid all the way out past the Natatorium and ended up in an area where they were swimming between surfers. The DLNR jet ski patrol kept an eye on them. 

Kaiwi slowly brought the pup back to their area and headed over to the OCC jetty where they swam around for a while. Then Mom barked and the pup followed her back to the beach in a spot closer to PO5's birthing spot.

PO5 still wasn't ready to nurse no matter how much mom tried. The kid just moved around the beach playing in the sand and picking up leaves and coral here and there.  

Melody called it a day mid afternoon.

Team R&B arrived at secrets and spent some time watching the dolphins.

They found Aukai RL12 alone resting on the reef to the left of the cove. There was one person who went swimming but they didn't bother the seal.

They put out signs while someone was having a photo session. They called the hotline and stayed and waited. They finally left at 1:30 no volunteer arrived.  Also there were no other seals so hopefully they have decided to go somewhere else.

At another west side location they found Puka RP30. He was up on left high rock resting.

Next they found RH76 Kala with RL08 who came back from KoOlina to visit with her. Guess she doesn't mind him hanging around.

Lastly they made a pass by guard rails and noticed a seal galumphing in a pond. They hurried back and found RH48 Lei Ola. She is doing fine and was alone without her escort R3CX from yesterday.

And lucky we live Hawaii, Team R&B were treated with a beautiful rainbow.

April 24, 2023 Monday's Dailies

Team R&B started at paradise cove and spotted a seal below the water in the cove. There were lots of tourist on shore and thankfully the security was ready with signs.

There was RL08 wanting to haul up, he kept snorting and barking. They pointed out his behavior to security that he waned to land, and that people needed to go up and away from the shore. Finally everyone backed off and RL08 immediately came up on shore and security put the signs out.

They called the hotline and around 10ish a volunteer arrived. Team R&B left to search for more.

At another west side location they found one seal. There at the seal inlet was the lovely large RH76 Kala. She was alone and resting peacefully. Since RL08 was at PC she got some good resting.

Next stop was at the bay and there on the rocks they found RL20 Kalua. He was resting but moved up

due to the rising surf. There was a fisherman to his left who kept waving and saying Hi, finally Rl20 snorted and the guy quickly ran further away.

Over to the left corner were two seals. They were surprised and thrilled to find Nalu R3CX and Lei Ola RH48. Lei Ola is looking good and her weight seems fine, no ribs showing after weaning PO2.  Nallu was very attentive towards her but being a gentleman.

There were lots of people around and then they noticed a homeless guy shooting a slingshot at the rocks. They stayed around until he left just to make sure all was okay.

Lastly they were passing makaha beach and saw lot of people, the big surf and a seal on shore. They hadn't seen a seal in this spot since Benny passed away. Of course they pulled over and tried to ID the seal. Although it looked familiar they could not be sure.

It was an adult male, had cc scar on his mid back, no tags that they could see and was very sandy.

At first they though maybe R3CU but didn't see bleach mark. Then maybe R407, but again could not be sure. They even checked at home on the computer, so in the end he was reported as an Unknown Male.

April 23, 2023 Sunday's Dailies

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:15 to 2:25 and there were seven seals during her viewing session.

Out on the rock flats of LPB was an Adult Female: adult size, light greenish gray female belly and two red tags. Marilyn believes this is the same A/F who was at SRI rock flats several times last week.

On LPB were Sadie RB12 and PO4. They spent most of the time in the water. Eventually about 2:15 they hauled out for a nursing session.

RF34 Pua and PO3 spent the first half hour in the water before hauling out near the 2BS about 12:45. Then they moved up the beach and PO3 had a long nursing session. Later moved further up the beach and went into snooze mode.

Initially alone in a tide pool in the rock flats near SRI was a seal Marilyn believes is RK24 Bruno/Wawamalu. He looked like he was in an awkward uncomfortable position in the tide pool. RK24: adult size, light ventral side, two red tags, scar on the lower lip and a scar on the right side about 1/3 forward of the rear flippers.

At 1:10 Marilyn became aware of an Unknown Adult hauling out onto the rock flats of SRI. Later the U/A galumphed closer to RK24 but there was no interaction. U/A: adult size, two red tags, never saw the ventral side so unknown gender.

Tammy is visiting Molokai and today with friend Liz hike Hale O Lono. They found four seals today!

First find was a 2020 pup that is untagged but has an ID #R07M.  Tammy pointed out that Team R&B saw him last year on the west side of Oahu, I think they nicknamed him Alika.

Next was another 2020 pup that is untagged ID# R06M. 

Their third find down the beach was a large female RN12, most likely born in 2013.

Lastly they found a female RL62. She suffered a shark bite a couple of years ago, but has healed nicely on her own.

Team R&B had a very slow day. At one of their stops they spent time watching a boobie catch a very sizable fish. He tried forever to swallow it, in the end Team R&B gave up on watching.

They finally found two seals. There was RH76 Kala and RL08 snoozing together on the rocks. Kala seemed like she wanted to leave, but stayed put while Team R&B were there.  She is looking very large and RL08 is very green. Probably from being in the water so long foraging.
