8/2/2014 DB's Dailies: T990@Irma's, U/U@BH, Kainoa@RI, M&M@WP, Kolohe@Maili Point

On yesterday’s T990 call I gave the two HPB officers that called in, my card. I paid the price for that at 0158 this morning when one of them called with the report of an animal at Irma’s, 200 ft east of the Kealahou traffic light. I advised him that I would be there.... just not right now !
sorry DB this made me laugh a little...  not at you but with you.  In all seriousness it's actually a comfort to know HPD is out there checking up on things at the beach.... and would actually take the time to make a call for a seal... in the middle of the night. :-)

At 0500 I was on the road and at 0517 still in darkness, I found T990 at that Irma’s location. I cordoned him off, and he has remained all day. We picked up the rope and left the signs. When we departed after dark T990 was still there.

At 0623 I found an U/U doing 7 minute dives at Blowhole. Buster is my guess but as usual ????? He was still there on Marilyn’s 1700 check.

At 0754 I found Kainoa (RN04) 40 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. He would be the only visible RI resident today. His molt is 50%.

Team Billand checked in at 0615 with the report of M&M (R020) fronting #1708, White Plains.

At 1315 they called with the report of Kolohe (RW22) at Maili Point.

 Kainoa
T990 this old dude deserves to be celebrated.... 31 and still here for us to admire.
 Kolohe at Maili Point
do you think seals have a sense of humor?  oh i don't know this is pretty silly if you ask me
and given all the difficult news of late it's good to have a good laugh!
that's right MM i see that twinkle in your eye

I love when monk seals burry their head in the sand.
Is T 990 the oldest known monk seal?

So terribly sad about KP5, but I am confused about a article that I read that said mom was going up and down the beach looking for her pup, was the pup found away from the mom also I realize how important it is for NOAA to determine the cause of death but wouldn't it helped mom if she seen her pup didn't make it, before it was taken if I understood the article correctly .

aloha !

I think at the moment T990 probably holds the record.... unless the folks in the NOAA office or DB have any additional information.

As far as the news article I will say this, do not believe everything you read. Although well intentioned, there are often errors. I wasn't there, so I can't say, but there are cases in which a "mom" will look for it's baby long after it's gone, all her maternal instincts are in full force. From everything I heard, she was near and did see her pup before it was removed from the site.
