Sorry for the late "dailies". I left Kermit on the beach in Waikiki at 2200. He was still there and in snooze mode. I'd gotten the original call from D. Schofield , reporting a Waikiki anmial at 0714. Obviously, it was Kermit . His left side mouth would appears fresh, and the left side of his face is still very swollen. He remained at his original haul out location until 1538. At that time he reentered the water, and swam, 10 ft off shore all the way to the Waikiki wall of the Natatorium. He then turned and went back to the west, hauling out again near lifeguard stand 2F, a bit east of his morning location. We re-cordoned him and I remained there with him until 2200 at night. After a conversation with D. Schofield I decided to leave the cordon and signs in place and call it a day at 2200. I'll recheck Kermit first thing in the morning.
Between 1100 and 1330 I got a chance to check Rabbit Island and found Benny, RIP and M38.
Posse member Mary Jay, reported Rocky in Ewa Beach today.

Seeing Kermits swollen cheek worries me. Is that an infection, will it drain if so? I know seals have incredible healing powers, but what about an infection? He looks different, almost Japanese now. Glad he had a long rest yesterday, even if it was Waikiki. Thanks to all who cared for him out there. Great pics DB.What sucks is, none of us can STOP this from happening again and again. Why is it happening often lately? Is food getting scarce here for our Critters? Now they are taking the bait with these large hooks. Don't know the answers or the reasons, I just wish it wouldnt happen again, and we all know...it will. Poor kids. Other than Kermits fat swollen cheek, he looks huge!!! I wonder how long it will take Kermit to come back to the SWQ? We'll miss him. Safe Journey sweet Kermit.
Hopefully Kermit's pain and suffering will have a good outcome both healthwise for him and for other seals. Kermit did his own outreach to the news media in letting people know about using barberless hooks. His ordeal and the use of these hooks was on every news station. It's so unfortunate that we have to have one of our guys maimed to outreach to the public and get these messages taught in such a graphic way. Kermit you are such a beauty to behold swimming and resting freely, even with your new look. Get well soon.
