10/9/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Benny, Pohaku, RL42, Right Spot, Rabbit Island Critters, Holokai, RJ16, Kolohe & Kauai Kolohe

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Posse pal Gayle.

As usual Team Billand were at paradise cove before the crack of dawn. At 5:15 under the silvery moon they found Da Benny RE74 close to the waters edge getting wet from the incoming high tide. They put a couple of signs but at 5:40am Da Benny left the area. He swam up the channel where there were schools of fish jumping in the dark that he decided to munch on. After a bite to eat he was gone for the day.

Team Billands' next find at 7:50am was Pohaku RO28 at Kalaeloa. They called the hotline to advise them of Pohaku's location, a dog running loose, along with campers and fishing poles lined up to the right of her.  They spent a little time educating people who wanted to get close to her. They had to leave the site for an appointment at 9:15am.

Their last find of the day at 20 minute beach was RL42 snoozing in a small pool, her head in the water, butt on the rocks with tags showing.  She was blowing bubbles (got to love these critters).

Our gal Gayle did a quick peek of Rabbit Island and found three critters. She also found Right Spot at Sandys.  Gayle reported that the morning lifeguard wanted signs up around Right Spot since today was a holiday and the fall break for most schools.

He came back with a creative solution, 2 rakes and some caution tape.  Caution tape isn't always a good idea as it draws attention to an area, but that is all they had to work with.  I still don't know WHY posse people aren't allowed to have signs.... It always worked in the past and there are many folks who use to put up signs that are no longer allowed.  I would be happy to hear an explanation from someone in the know.

Late email from posse pal Vicki brought news from the north shore. She spotted Holokai RG40 and RJ16 and from her description RJ16 was on his own for awhile when big brother left the site.

Vicki also stopped off in Kahuku and where 2 adult males were hanging out. Volunteer onsite ID'd them as Kolohe RW22, and RK36 Kauai Kolohe. Hard to tell from the photos who is who.
