10/31/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Pohaku RO28, Kekoa RK72, Lei Ola RH48, Ka'ale RH32, PVKauai RW02, Right Spot R016, & U/U

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley, my pal Po, and Gayle who got skunked.

Team Billand was at White Plains at 6:30 am where they found RO28 Pohaku. She was about 12 feet of the cabin, and they were able to get the signs up and put up a zone before the guest were up.  When they all came out they were delighted and spent time listening to Team Billand monk seal 101.

Team Billands next stop at Maili where they found three seals. Kekoa RK72 was to the left of the other two seals, alone not bothering the other two. (Barbara commented Kekoa is a gentlemen like Kermit, these three can possibly be the next Benny, Kermit and Irma).  Lei Ola was on the rocks but Kaale came charging in towards her. He was just naughty, bugging her, nudging her belly, climbing on her back, very happy to see her. It's very cool to see these young seals together.

Lesley reported just after dawn she spied a shape moving down the beach near Camp Erdman Point. Later when she checked she found RW02 PVKaui had spent the night. The side of his body has some spots but due to the light and his position it's hard to tell how far along his molt is coming along. Lesley checked in with him again this evening and he was pretty much in the same place.

I received a couple of photos this afternoon via text message, of two adult seals on Moku Nui. The photos don't reveal much except one show a clear shot of RO16's natural bleach mark. One seal was said to have tags the other did not. Thank you to my pal Po, for always trying to get a picture. So since Gayle got skunked we know where R016 Right Spot went.

10/31/2017 Happy Halloween !

BOO !!

10/30/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: PVKauai (RW02), Ka'ale (RH32), Kekoa Alii (RK72), Lei Ola (RH48), and Kea (RN46)

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Team Billand and Gayle.

Lesley checked this morning to find RW02 PVKauai had spent the night at Camp Erdman. Shortly after looking from the driveway I saw him leaving. Late afternoon he was back up on the beach seems he may have finally started his molt. (yay!)

Team Billand found RH32 Ka'ale on the edge of the rocks at Kahe. He was alone looking plump, tag showing and resting comfortably. Then they took a few minutes to enjoy the sunrise and have a little fun too.

Next stop Maili they found Lei Ola RH48 and Kekoa Alii RK72 inland on the rocks, just chilling in peace. Lei Ola is still got a hook and other than the side of her face looking a little dark she seems to be not sufferering, not stressing at all. She and Kekoa get along just fine, no fighting not whooping or barking, posturing.  Team Billand spent time with two ladies talking story about Lei Ola, they had fun sharing, only to be followed by an incident at the homeless camp which was their cue it was time to go.

Gayle almost got skunked today by she spotted and was able to ID one critter on Rabbit Island. Thank you Kea RN46 for your big beautiful natural bleach marks.

10/29/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Kekoa Alii (RK72), Pohaku (RO28), Aukai (RL12), Three Rabbit Island Critters, Kea (RN46), Right Spot (R016)

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley, Mrs. Whisperer and Gayle.

Team Billand was out doing their rounds and spotted a seal at Maili. There they ID'd RK72 Kekoa Alii on the lower rocks sleeping. There were lots of homeless folks around the area today before 6am, the Billands decided to leave the area to keep Kekoa and themselves safe. When they went back later he was gone. They did note he looked good, nice weight, no molt yet.

Team Billand was headed out to Makua side when they got a call of two seals, so they hurried back to Plains.  Pohaku RO28 was high up on shore resting, Lifeguard already put up signs and ropes. She looks great and has gained weight. The other seal took off before Team Billand got to site, never saw the seal. Pohaku left at 2:45 pm.

Lesley was out this morning for another hike out to the point. She met up with Jaime and they hiked back out together. The only seal out there today on Back Beach was a little surprise, it was RL12 Aukai, she is looking great. Lesley had a good chance to document her ID old and new marks.

Mrs. Whisperer spent several hours viewing Rabbit Island from Makai Pier this afternoon. When she first looked at noon, she found two seals, one about 20 feet east of the first blue sign (1BS) and a second seal about 10 feet west of the 3BS. At 13:43 a new seal arrived and hauled out about 30 feet east of the 3BS. There was no interaction among any of the seals.

Seal #1 unknown adult or subadult male with 2 red tags. Seems to have a relatively new coat. No other distinctive markers.
Seal #2 unknown juvenile (probably male) with 2 red tags. This seal has a somewhat brown coat and gave lots of belly and back views, but could not get an ID
Seal #3 RN46 (Kea) Identified by the small natural bleach marks on his left front flipper and larger natural bleach on his right front flipper. He has molted since NOAA applied his N46 bleach on 9/27/17.

Posse Pal Gayle spotted two seals on Rabbit Island ( I am going to guess seal #1 & #2 that Marilyn spotted). Gayle also spent some time with Right Spot R016 at Kaupo Beach. Right Spot departed at 12:25 and did not return for the rest of the day.
