3-23-2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Trek and Hotline Update

Marilyn & I did our Saturday morning Ka'ena Point monitoring. The weather was very nice, albatross were playing in the wind, our little albatross is growing fast and the whales were on the move.

RW02 "Kauai PV" was the only seal at the point. He was hauled out on his favorite reef just at the entrance of the Main Pool. The tide was very low with occasional bigger sets washing in.

As we were leaving and doing our last checks we saw a little head going up in down at the entrance of Ka'ena's Pool. It turned out to be RL42 (F b.2012), she struggled to climb the wall into the pool, checked the area then hauled out on a side reef and went to sleep.

On our hike back we went by Birth Beach but there was no sign of little RN58 "Luana" or R303 "BG".

10 Minutes Beach and Hidden Beach were also seal free today - for the best, since there were people camping everywhere.

The HOTLINE was as busy this morning as it was yesterday. Many calls reporting seals on the West side. Thank you to those calls we are able to get volunteers to the sites to ID the seals and do outreach with the public.

Please report all Monk Seal sightings on Oahu to the Monk Seal Sighting Hotline (808) 220-7802   Aloha, Lesley
