3-16-2014 DB's Dailies: RM38&Kainoa@RI, Pohaku@Sec, RW30,RW02&Ka'ena@KP, Buster@WP, Kolohe@Maili Pt, Benny@Maili BP, Ewa Girl@WSK

The day got off to a miserable, zero visibility start, but on my 2nd look at Rabbit Island at 0929 I found RM38 at Left Greenery, and Kainoa (RN04) at Right Middle Cliff, on Rabbit Island. They would remain all day, and were my only SE quadrant finds. Thanks to Gayle for the treks !
At 0647 Team Billand called to advise that volunteer Linda had reported Pohaku (RO28) at Secrets. She would depart at 1330.
At 1007 Marilyn checked in from the end of the world with RW02, RW30 & Ka’ena (RO40) at the Main Pool at Ka’ena Point. Ka’ena & RW02 were vying for the attention of the lovely RW30.
At 1018 the Billands called to advise that Buster (RV08) had hauled out fronting the Snack Shack at White Plains. He would depart at 1445.
At 1255 Ocean Safety called with the report of an animal at Makaha. The animal was gone when volunteers arrived.
At 1256 the Billands found an U/U at Maili Point. The surf was just too gnarly to get out there for an ID .
At 1351 Team Billand found Benny (RE74) at Maili Beach Park.
At 1615 the Billands reported Ewa Girl (RS00) at Wind Sock.

I almost never check the comments on da’ blog, but I’m glad I did today because I happened on to the Hotline calls of the 14th and saw that R5AY had been seen hauled out in Kahuku. This is her first know sighting since weaning. Also, U’ilani was apparently seen in the Kewalo Basin area.

Mahalo to Jean Jasina, Allan R. and Brandi Apana for taking care of BUSTER at White Plains. ITs SPRING BREAK...So the beaches will be nuts again, with lots of people.

Brandi, thanks for finding Ewa Girl at WINDSOCK late afternoon. It was nice that she had a good rest, we stayed till 5:40pm. The winds were wild, chilly, we were frozen out there.

I dont know why, but Buster Boy was very alert yesterday. He kept looking west, like he was afraid of someone. He would keep jumping up, tossed his tail, I wonder, if , someone did something to him. Poor kid. He departed 2:45pm per Brandi.

Sometimes on the beach, you meet total strangers from the mainland. WEll I met TERRA..who loved Pohaku, and saw her last year when she was Pregnant. We had to leave, Terra was willing to tell folks what she learned about Pohaku, to keep folks away from her. I gave her a hug...I love it when folks take a watch for the sake of the critters they can get the rest needed.

Miss Pohaku, she just loves KoOlina..secrets, especially. It actually is a great spot for a seal, and NOT. Because of the volume of different people out there, coming all the time, a seal needs to be monitored. Ropes have to be far enough for the seals peace and quiet, volunteers needed to EDUCATE.

I wish the hotel industry would make a footpath, that is paved, so when a seal comes a shore, folks can get to THE OTHER SIDE OF BEACH...SAFELY. We watch folks slipping on rocks, falling, we watch the seal looking at folks that talk to them. There is a tree from LAST YEAR, that fell and is dangling on shore. The branches stick out, with thorns..someone not paying attention could poke their eyes. How come we can see the dangers for humans and not the industry. I feel, a visitor should be given a safe free pathway..dont you???

If they should ever make a footpath for the visitors, all could enjoy a nice walk, wheel chairs could make the trek out there. I feel bad when families cant take a relative to the area.

They could call the footpath..Discovery Walk. A seal can get it's rest, if high tide, no need to let folks risk going in between waves to the OTHER SIDE, IN FRONT OF A sleeping seal. And Folks can walk on a stable ground rather than the huge boulders that sometimes...move. EVERYONE LOVES WALKING passed the seal...there are safety issues here.

We see the issues..we think someone should do something about the area. Dont you????

I think, SAFETY and Relaxing out at KoOlina, giving a seal a small space are things to THINK ABOUT.
