While sitting with Makaiwi R4DF, four horses came trotting by, two jeeps had to park on shore, and one loose dog roamed around. But Makaiwi was just fine, snoozing away.
M and M was found at Maili, alone, and on the rocks, looking mighty plump, large, but sweet.
Now while we were with Makaiwi, got two calls of a seal swimming around, going passed the cottages. Got the last call saying the small seal landed at the cabins. So I went to investigate, who that seal was and put out the signs. Rob remained with Makaiwi as there were lots of folks around.
As I got to site, I didnt see any seal. I questioned folks at the cabin, seeing that SOMETHING went on. Turns out, poor seal got attacked by a dog. Folks couldnt believe the owners did nothing to STOP the dog. Seal ran in the water, followed by the dog. I kept searching, a lady said the seal went..West. It took a bit, but I spotted the seal, coming back towards cabin 1944 Plains. The dog was near 1760, still roaming and digging holes in the sand. More folks kept telling me about the dog and the seal..mean while the seal came right up on shore, looking mighty freaked out, looking right, left, then hauled up in front of me. I was thrilled, but the dog was still out there...folks started gathering around the seal, I tried stopping them. I needed help, so I called Base Police. Seal kept coming higher towards the grass. I id the seal as SharkBite T15M. He must have been extra tired as he just kept coming. I asked some folks to keep others back while I got the signs out. When I came back, there were folks standing within 10 feet of the seal, who was posturing, looking, wide eyed and alert. Placed all the signs out, roped off seal, having hard time with two signs as ground was so hard. A military dude came running by, asked if I needed Help...YES, please. He kindly placed both signs in the earth..I educated folks..Base Police arrived, showed them the area dog was...Military Man took the police right up to the cabin folks with the dog. They went right up and talked to the renters of the cabins.
I drove back to go get Robert from Kalaeloa, returned to T15M's site..Base Police left but they said the dog turned out to be a SERVICE DOG!!!! Military dude says the dog had been roaming the shores all day long, Lifeguards talked to the owners twice...as white plains does not allow dogs here at all. And all reports made to me, claimed the owners just laughed at the attack and did nothing to restrain the dog. I dont know what was said with Folks of the dog and Police. But every one was now controled. Rob and I remained till 7PM..educating. And guess what...two of the people from the cabin and the dog came to check out the seal with a kid. We also placed two DOG SIGNS on shore..folks read it. And Rob educated the ladies about the dogs and seal problems. They said they had no idea, dogs werent allowed. So, now they are aware.
As for Makaiwi, she remains on shore, with signs, ropes taken down. We were also approached by a homeless man at Kalaeloa. He asked if we wanted to buy..FISHING LURES. Ah no thanks. We tried to educate this man. He had his family and A DOG TOO. It wasnt easy to leave Makaiwi...knowing a dog was near by, loose. That dog attacked the horses and the owners of the horses gave a piece of their mind to the homeless man and his dog.
Thats all folks...another adventurous day with Monk Seals, Humans and Dogs. Holy crap!
