6-12-11 DB Dailies

On my 0630 look at Rabbit Island, from the Makapuu Overview, I found M&M (R020) and Pup, on D#19, 60 ft right of 3BS. They were headed for the water with the pup well in the lead. Mom was just tryin' to keep up. This would be the first of 3 separate swim sessions observed today. There were 3 feeds on the breaks in between. They ended the day at the 3BS.

Also at 0630 I found Kolohe (RW22) on the left side rocks of Rocky Right Beach, the rubble cove at the right end of the beach. The bummer was that he was not visible from Makai Pier. He was only visible from the Overview, until the high tide forced him higher at 1228.

When I got back to the Pier at 0922 I found that Duke (RA12) had joined the cast, tucked into the base of the Mid Middle Cliff area. He would remain there all day.

On our 0743, Spitting Cave check we found Buster (RV08) doing 12 minute dives. Team Billand called at 1012 with the report of Makaiwi (R4DF), fronting #1706, at White Plains. The Billands came through again with the report of Rocky (RH58) at Iroquois Point at 1219.

Dera called at 1021 to advise of the report of an animal near the showers at Diamond Head. Per her voice mail it appeared that the animal had been there since 0030. It was reported to have a bleach, but no info as to what the bleach said nor it's location. Colleen was in Kailua, so Dana called at 1056 to advise that volunteer Don was responding. Unfortunately, the animal left just as Don arrived, so there was no ID possible. For office purposes this will have to be carried as an U/U, but anyone with a functioning "Duh? Gene" knows that it was, in all probability , Irma, but ???????????

Keith Kenyon did the Ka'ena Point trek today, and found Ka'ena (RO40), Kerby (RW08) and Noa (R6FI), at the end of the world.

My day ended with a gusto , with a call from Portlock Posse Member, Susan Lewis at 1620. She advised that her son, Aaron had just come back from checking the surf at Access #120B, which is the area between China Walls, and the Kokee Flats in Portlock. Though I check the other two spots daily, I have never looked at this spot, because I didn't think anybody could be there, and because the C&C had fenced off the access sometime ago. Enterprising surfers had cut a hole in the fence. Susan's other son, Paul, reported that they were still there at 1627, so we were on our way. When we arrived, at 1650, we found RB16, a 4 year old female from Molokai, along side Buster (RV08). We had seen Buster at Spitting Cave this morning.

In yesterday's edition of the blog, you may recall that I found a single animal off shore of the Kokee Flats, which I thought to be Buster, and that the fishermen there were sure that they had seen 2 animals. Today's find would certainly support that thought. This location is just a few feet away from both China Walls and Irma's Grotto, at Kokee.

I had last seen RB16 on 3-10-11 when she became the only animal to ever haul out on the rocks at Spitting Cave, right along side the cave. Records show that she was seen after that back on Molokai, but the Billands saw her on 3-28-11 at Tracks in the SW Quadrant. Again she was seen after that on Molokai, so obviously this little girl makes the trek back and forth with no problems at all.

 Amazing anyone spotted them

Those are some kewl shots of the seals at China Walls access 120 #B. It looks so familiar!
Back in my old surf days, were talking 30 years ago, I believe they called that place "the finger".
It is a knarly place to exit the water in big surf or small surf. If you couln't get back to the Wall in high surf we used to exit the water at the finger.
Still very dangerous!! I remember almost losing my life there or having the live scared out of me...lol! Well not too funny at the time.
If you couldn't make it in at the Wall you had your choice of Hamburger Rock or the Finger. It was call Hamburger Rock because if you missed your exit at the Wall all that would be left of you is hamburger!! That is if you got washed up over this rock by mistake from being a kook!
Ah! What memories! Wish I was a seal back then I would have had no problem. What a place to take a seal snooze! Great Pictures!!! aloha, kelly girl:)

Kelly Girl,
The surf break is still called fingers and very popular.
Actually all the names are still the same + Pillar and others.
I love to go for a swim at China Walls and have missed "the" wave to jump out on more than one occasion - NO FUN.
This morning I found Buster in that corner again, sure is a nice quiet one.
Aloha, Lesley
