Aloha Volunteers,
The seal that was spotted on Kahuku Golf Course Access has been recently located at Kaena Point. Kaena Point poses many logistical problems in dehooking an animal. Any areas that pose rocky and inaccessible geography poses difficult issues for the seal and for the response team. Marilyn Dunlap is doing a trek on Saturday to see if and where the animal is.
We need to know early Sunday if the animal is there, so that we can determine if we can send a team out. Anyone that is willing and willing to make a trek to Kaena Point to locate the critter we need eyes, binoculars, cameras, and phones to let us know about sending a rescue team out there.
This is what we are all about, search and response. The scientists are there to do the actual rescue.
Please let Dera and me know if you can do an early hike to Kaena Point to locate the animal in question. It has a bleach mark 761 and is a very thin female.
SUNDAY AM EARLY is crucial to be able to get scientists out there for this critter. A detailed area report is needed and where. Logistics such as on rocks on beach in lagoons. If the animal is in a rocky or ledge type area rescue will not be viable. Please understand this is for the safety for the animal and for the rescue team.
Any GPS coordinates and other information with cameras and scopes is also helpful if you have the

Wasn't going to make the hike this Sunday, but... I'll be there sometime between 9 AM and 11:30AM.

Anyone know what side it's on (waianae or waialua)?
Anyway I was going to hike there tomorrow anyway so I'll just go earlier.

So much for crucial... was there from 7:41 AM to 10:50 AM and relieved by a volunteer named Willy. Didn't see any seals with hoofs.
Would like to know NOAA's real plan for both animals with hooks. An explanation for any delays in removing the hooks would be really good. There are people out here who want to understand.
Mahalos!

Aloha Keith...
I can't speak FOR NOAA, but from what I understand it is difficult to restrain, capture a seal out at Ka'ena Point because of the rocky terrain.
This is for the safety of the seals and people involved... the safety of the seal and people are always factored in these cases. Although the hook is disturbing and DOES need to come out, at the moment trying to capture her at that location is being looked at very carefully.
da blog lady
That might be part of it, Donna. Thanks. I think there might be more. I copied you on an e-mail I just sent. My request for the Real plans stands.
