First of all, Team Billand called at 0818 with the amazing news that they were with Makaiwi (R4DF) at Nimitz Beach. Any of you who have been around a while , know that this little girl came to us from Kauai. Oh I hope we get some good shots soon... I miss her.
Nothing more is known about her history prior to that . She has since worked her way to the Big Island and now back up the chain , to arrive right back where it all began for us on Oahu. She had last been seen on Oahu by the Billands, at Campbell Industrial Park on 10-6-10, before starting out on her great adventure. Her last sighting had come from Diane Pike on Molokai on 2-15-11.
The other piece of "Live...Local...Connected" news is the birth of the first pup of 2011, at Kalaupapa, sometime between 0830 yesterday, and 1430 today, per Eric Brown, born to RQ21.
A later email from Diane Pike, our Molokai correspondent, said that RQ21 had taken last year off, and for some reason that prompted me to quit working on the dailies, and begin delving into da' data. Lo and behold I came up with the following factoids. Yes... RQ21 did take last year off, but from 2003 thru 2009 she has given us 3 boys, and 4 girls, all on Molokai, and she herself was born a Molokai girl in 1997. Ain't data grrrrrrreat !!!!! And this is why we love our Seal Whisperer.... <3
I did a mid day recheck of the rest of the SE quadrant, and when I got back to Makai Pier at 1220, I found that M38 had joined the cast, snoozin' away on the water front rocks to the right of Seal Rock Inlet, at the right end of the beach on RI. He too would remain the rest of the day.
On a routine pan of the beach at 1243, I suddenly noticed that one of the rocks that I'd passed over a zillion times today, suddenly had a red tag showing. Lo and Behold, it would turn out to be Mojo, down amongst the water front rocks at the right end of the Middle Cliff area. He would move up with the tide and remained the rest of the day.
In addition the the Makaiwi news, Team Billand also reported Kermit at Oneula Place, in lovely downtown Ewa Beach at 0948.
They would also journey to Makaha to reported Benny at Makaha at 1702. Incidently, while the rest of us were looking at kinda'sorta' blue skies, the Billands on the west side had dumping rain and thunder. In fact Makaiwi was scared off at 1510 by thunder.
While Team Billand was at Makaha they decided to take care of a situation that Lesley had found some weeks ago. Apparently, somebody decided to use Monk Seal signs as stakes to hold up newly planted trees. Team Billand tookem' back !
Dera called at 0942 with the report of an animal in Hauula. She reported in again at 1035 to say that Dave & Ella had confirmed the R5AY ID.
M38 - quick glance looks like many seals amazing DB you can find them let alone ID them.
Go Robert !
Kermit @ Ewa Beach
Benny @ Makaha
So what is it about these seals and blocking access paths, seems to be a fav spot to some.
