FOUR HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL LEGISLATIVE INITIATIVES

January – April 2010

1. Increase Penalties – All Endangered Species

Currently, under state law, it is only a misdemeanor to intentionally kill/harm an endangered species. Given the three recent seal shootings, increasing the state penalties to a class C felony is a needed deterrent for future endangered species killings.

3. PSA on Incoming Flights

Directs airlines to play a PSA that highlights Hawaii’s unique ecosystem and features the Hawaiian monk seal, our critically endangered state mammal. Outreach and education to residents and visitors is essential to preserve Hawaii’s fragile environment.
