7-3-11 DB Dailies

At 0644 I found Nani and M&M (R020) doing a feed at "Right Greenery", right of 1BS. Oh yeah........ It's a Girl !!! I'm goin' with "Nani". It means pretty or beautiful. I've been looking at a navel, surrounded by a box set of 4 nipples, and more importantly no penis, or penile ridge, for 3 days now. I haven't said anything because I was hoping for a killer confirming shot, but somehow I don't seem capable of getting "the shot". There is always something wrong. I am 8/10th of a mile away ,so there is room for pilot error, but I think we got us a girl. They had Rabbi Island all to themselves today. This was D#40 so we are past her 39 day date of 2009. Only M&M knows now.

Team Billand called at 1015 with the report of Max (R5EW) at the east end fence line at White Plains. The Billands reported his departure at 1458.

The Billands called again at 1406 to report that they were following Benny (RE74) has he worked his way from Nimitz Beach, to Wind Sock, Kalaeloa, and finally at 1458, hauling out to a totally packed beach, fronting the Snack Bar at White Plains. Barbara said it was the worst experience ever, and that is sayin' alot coming from the Billands who are the world's foremost authorities on crappy Monk Seal experiences. Apparently they finally got all the donkeys out of the way. Benny would depart at 1629. When the Billands last reported they were following Benny on his journey to the west.

Barbara called at 1722 to advise that Benny was now between the two bunkers on the west side of the Nimitz Jetty, and lying up against a guys fishing pole, which is set in the sand. Stay tuned... apparently, it ain't over yet. I'm happy to report that Barbara called at 1753 to advise that Benny had moved and the guy recovered his pole.

Email from Tracy this afternoon brought news that Lona (R017) had pupped at Kalaupapa on Wed., 6-29-11. For those of you that haven't met Lona, when she is here she is primarily a North Shore girl, but she seems to spend most of her time on Maui, except for pupping, which has always been Kalaupapa.

In the same email Tracy advised that "Mama Eve" (R006) had also pupped on 7-1-11, at Kalaupapa. She is a Molokai girl, and has given birth to many children and grandchildren that you'e seen on Oahu. She is affectionately referred to as the Mother of all Monk Seals.

Dana called at 0800 to report that new posse person Elva Schaben, and also Jeannie Martinson, reported Right Spot (R016) at Rocky Point. Elva's photo confirms the Right Spot ID.

Team Billand called at 0818 to advise that someone they spoke with today, told them that he'd seen a hooked seal at Yokes (on the sand) on Wed. 6-29-11. A little more timely reporting would have been much appreciated.

M+M and Nani ( we have another girl.. so wonderful )

God bless all the volunteers who came out today to keep a watch on our Monks on shore. Man the crowd was a big one, lots of screaming kids, running with the seal Benny. I watched the people running along the shore with Benny, trying to get a picture, trying to yell at him, some splashed water at him...poor thing. he tried to haul up many many times at every spot. But folks just wouldnt leave him alone. We all begged folks, PLEASE, LET THE SEAL HAUL IN, THEN TAKE YOUR PHOTOS. BUT folks persued the seal any ways.

When Benny finally reached Nimitz cottages, I thought we could get the crowds there back..Benny did try to haul up, stayed only a few minutes, then looked at allllll the people in his face, turned and left the site. Benny stayed close to shore line, bobbing up and down, dodging some guys who were stubborn, got in his path to splash water in his face. Rob tried to stop the guys.
Benny finally ended up at Nimitz at the last two bunkers. He found a great spot...with only a couple of fishermen and two poles. He hauled up, inch by inch, looking..wondering if it was a safe spot. Unfortunately, he went up to a fishing pole stuck in the sand in a pole holder. He moved up to pole, his foreflipper hugging the pole. And every time Benny moved, the big BELL would chime, freaking out Benny. Then he tried to turn into the pole, and the bell rang louder...causing him to like look from side to side, wondering WHAT TA HELL IS THAT???? The fishermen got nervous, went to get his pole. I tried to yell at the guy, STOP, dont go near the seal...TOO LATE, Benny lundged forward, barking at man..who was stunned. In the end, benny fell a sleep, we got the pole out and gave it to the fishermen who was relieved and happy he got his pole. We left Benny, he was ok he could rest now, after all that comotion.
Thanks to all the volunteers for coming out to help...you are all appreciated for your efforts and bravery.

for me...I am grateful Benny now had a place of peace and quiet. It was worth following him to see if he could find a spot.
As for max, Kelly girl kept a watch on his location until he was gone, heading Ewa way. Be safe little max, sorry for all the drama. Seal ya tomorrow, THE LAST DAY of a long weekend.
