7/7/2018 Monk Seal Dailies:

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn, Lesley and our seal pal Val from Kauai.
Lesley's update includes today's information as well as yesterdays observations.  I also posted an update with photos and a video from Melody under Yesterday's News.  I had a little catching up to do.

Team Billand started their morning checking in at the all you can eat breakfast buffet and it was about 45 minutes before they spotted RH32 Kaale coming in for his breakfast.  Even before he entered the outfall he caught himself two fish.  Once he devoured those fish he came in swam about and dove for a long time before catching, and this time it was a small stick fish.
Team Billand counted up to 30 fishermen at the site but not all at once, they come and go, just a few stay all day. They also spotted two turtles, one large barracuda and lots of Akule, and a huge Kawakawa.  After about 4 hours they lost sight of Ka'ale and did n't see him again.
Just before Ka'ale left a volunteer arrived and someone from NOAA and posted a large sign which says " Don't feed the Seals".  This is good news.
Later in the day Team Billand found Ka'ale on the rocks sleeping peacefully.

Team Billands only other find today was RN14 Kalani on a west side beach. They found him in a deep sleep with waves crashing around him. He was down for the count. He was still there on their last check and must be really tired from what ever journey he was on.

Marilyn made the Ka'ena trek this morning with Lesley but first stopping off at Birth Beach to check on the weaners.  Puna RK88 was in the tide pools. Further towards Camp Erdman they found RK40 Napua just hauling out.  When they returned around noontime Puna was hauled out in the middle of Birth Beach and Napua was still towards Camp Erdman side.

News from Kauai arrived from our pal Val! She visited with the pups today PK3 and PK4, all are doing well.  PK3 (KC's pup) has been ID'd as a male, and PK4 (Pohaku's pup) is yet to be determined.
KC & PK3 were napping when she first arrived and then took a 45 minute swim session.  Little PK4 was more animated and she got a couple of good pictures before it fell asleep.
