7/7/2018 Monk Seal Dailies (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Update Yesterday & Today

FROM UPDATE: Friday July 6, 2018 (yesterday's news)
Day started very early, I checked the PlayPen before heading out to meet a group of 6th grade students from the Kamehameha Summer Camp with whom I spent all morning.

RK88 "Puna" (M) D69 & RK40 "Napua" (F) D63 were playing together in the water.
I had to come back mid morning so I checked on them again they were hauling out together. When I looked @ my downloaded photos in the afternoon I noticed  ball of line in front of their faces. I went back down to the beach. "Puna" was on the water line and entered the water. "Napua" was hauled out high mid beach.
I looked down were they had been earlier and saw the line. I went around the beach and down to pick it up. It was a seadebris ball of line with 2 old rusty hooks. I don't think the brought it up but it was on the watsr line right were they hauled up to.

There was a fresh wallow high up the beach near the Big Camp site. Some big seal must have overnighted.
Same at thing Hidden Beach.

At the point RO40 Ka'ena was hauled out in his pool.

While we were at the point with all the students we saw a seal swim by on the outer reefs. We followed it. He made his way into Ka'ena's Pool. It was RW02 "PVKauai". One word from "Ka'ena" he turned on his flippers and left.
What a treat for the kids to see some action.     Great outreach day  Aloha🌺

TODAY's UPDATE: July 7th, 2018:
Marilyn joined me this morning for our Birth Beach to KPt monitoring.
We met at the PlayPen, RK88 "Puna" (M) D70 was playing in one of the Keiki Coves. RK40 "Napua" (F) D64 was hauled out on the beach near the big Camp Site.
The Pkg lot was packed with the FIRECRACKER run event - runners were already starting to arrive from the 10 miles run (to Yokohama Beach and back). Congratulations go out to John & PJ Salmonson, Benita & husband and all of the HURT team for a VERY well organized race !!
There was also a bike race that started at Camp Erdman and went around the point and from there to town.
It seemed a little chaotic but no accidents were registered.

At Mokuleia side of 10Mnts Beach RG40 "Holokai" was hauled out sleeping. He was still there on our way back.

At Hidden Beach RK36 "Kauai Kolohe" was hauled out sleeping. The runners were crossing the beach and he wasn't disturbed. He was no longer there when we came back from the point.

At the point we found RW02 "PVKauai" sleeping on the beach of Ka'ena's Pool.

We were entertained for a longtime watching the Albatross chicks learning how to fly. Many of them have already left.   Aloha ðŸŒº
