7/3/2018 Monk Seal Dailies (part 1)

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley, Marilyn and Melody.

Team Billand spotted RH32 Kaale at the early bird breakfast buffet this morning. He was gorging as usual catching all the Akule, they observed him eating six.  A little later they spotted one of the fishermen with a large lure at the end of the pier. It was a matter of seconds when Kaale grabbed the lure and attached was a large Uku.
What is amazing here is this little critter took the large fish held on, broke the line and took off to deep water. They watched closely as he ripped and tossed the fish, they saw the lure with treble hooks. Kaale kept at it tossing the fish around and ripping it apart, and much to their surprise they saw Kaale toss the lure away and off the fish.  He then began to chow down on the fish !
Although scary, seems he figured out how to get rid of the hook.... too smart for his own good.

Today Team Billand, Diane, Tammy, Tracy, Marilyn and I met at Makai Pier to commemorate DB who passed a year ago today. We all had a chance to look through the scope and check out Rabbit Island. Marilyn probably saw the most action between all of us. At one point or another there were four seals on island. On the left point beach weaner PO6 who was soon visited by two unknown seals UU #1 and UU#2.  PO6 was run into the water but hauled out about 30 feet to the right of its original position.
About halfway between 1BS and 2BS was a juvenile HMS on the sand. The seal had tags but it was unclear if it were a male or female.

Melody sent an email sharing her getaway to visit weaner cousins today. Initially she did not see them, but looking down the shoreline towards Camp Erdman way, she spotted a seal nestled in the sand. When she arrived closer sure enough there was a large male snoozing. She spent a while watching him but kept checking back to see if the weaners were around. and at one point she spotted a nice white belly glowing in the sunlight.  Melody called the siting into the hotline and was able to confirm the weaners ID by getting tag numbers.

And last but not least we want to wish Kea 5th birthday. (wow five already) Kea is Irma's last known pup. Kea is also Kaiwi's little brother.  Happy Birthday Kea born on the 4th of July!
