6/27/2018 Monk Seal Dailies:

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Lesley and some news from our Seal Pal Val.
Lesley's complete Ka'ena Update is part two of the dailies. Lesley is still having computer problems so she's been sending in her update through her phone. (Thank you Lesley for your dedication).

Team Billand went out to the outfall to check and while waiting they were talking story with fishermen when one of them signed, the seals are here. They immediately spotted Ka'ale RH32 and then spotted Kalani RN14.  Kalani didn't stay long and took off within 30-40 minutes later.
Ka'ale of course made the most of the all you can eat buffet. At first he was just foraging not really chasing the fish but within a couple of hours he went "ballistic" . Team Billand could actually see the fish coming in and Ka'ale went for it. They were out there for about 5 hours and observed him eating about 25 fish, mostly Akule.
People were gathering today, even the security guard came over to see what was going on.  Team Billand also met up with a retired graphic designer who was very interested in the seals. Of course they shared their monk seal 101 story.
Team Billand finally left the site after several hours, after watching the kid do things, like chase fish, poop, jumped at the wall for crabs. He even chased a fish on the surface.

After leaving Ka'ale Team Billand stopped off at a Leeward Beach and saw a green seal from afar, but by the time they got close enough for an ID they only saw Kalani RN14, vocalizing with the seal that took off.  Then Kalani RN14 took off and was zooming off shore, they did not see him again.

Team Billand made the Ka'ena West trek and came across Benny RE74 and RL42 Leia together in a shallow pond snoozing. Benny got a little closer to her, she didn't like it, so she moved up, and Benny followed.  In the end they galumphed between the rocks, which provided good camouflage.

After their Ka'ena Trek they made one more stop at a westside beach. They found Lei Ola was on top of the rocks, the tide was very high. Barbara suspects Lei Ola might be the seal that was with RN14.
Lei Ola was resting comfortably, Team Billand left her in late afternoon.

Big News from our Seal Pal Val on the Island of Kauai we have a birth announcement!  Oahu seal "KC" RK28 gave birth yesterday 6/26/2018 to Kauai's 3rd pup (PK3).   Val sent us some photos of Mom & Pup.  I am thrilled to know our beloved KC made it to Kauai where she will be looked after. I look forward to hearing about PK3 as we watch another pup grow up.  Thank you Val !
