6/12/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Update

Another early morning checking on the playpens. Surprise RN58 "Luana" was hauled out on PO4 Beach. She's looking great for who just weaned a pup 4 days ago!
PO4 "Puna D45, RL42 "Leia" & PO5 "Napua" D39 were all together playing in the water near the left cove.
On my second check after picking up guests to go out to the point "Luana" was in the exact same position, and the "Trio" had hauled out. "Puna" had his eyes wide open checking on "Leia" then he moved further up the beach. "Napua" came around and over mom and settled for a possible nursing.

On our way out to the point we stopped @ 10 Mnts Beach, and met up with Jaime & Meredith. RW02 "PVKauai" was hauled out near waterline a big turtle was making his way down to the water in a bee line to "PVKauai". Over the years I have seen a big turtle perhaps once or twice a year in the exact same location, but never saw a nest there. I'd put my "cats" on it that it's the same one. <---- do you need to borrow my cat? lol
Unfortunately there was a dead small young turtle being washed on the waterline. Calls were made and little turtle was retrieved.

At the point surprise #2 - RG40 "Holokai" was in "Squinty's haulout", he still has the radio (?) antenna. He was looking fine, healthy and big.

Summer is here, make sure to take LOTs of water, sunscreen and hat on your hikes. Can't believe the amount of people hiking out in the midday sun. I'm on a 2nd bottle of sunscreen for visitors in the UTV.  Aloha ðŸŒº

she looks like she put on a little weight since she weaned Puna
