At 0625 I found Sadie & Pup (D#35) up in the Morning Glory, left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. They would do a couple of water sessions and 3 feeds in my presence, remaining at the far left end of RI all day.
At 0930 I found what would prove to be Kekoa (RK72)!!!!, 100 ft left of 1BS, on RI. His last RI visit was on 1-13-13. The photo sux but that big, beautiful N72 bleach was a wonderful sight to behold. He has remained all day.
Also at 0930 I found a juvenile female, with 2 red tags partially visible behind the water front rocks of Rocky Right Beach. It would prove to be Nani (RK60).
Unfortunately, the tranquility of RI, was disrupted by the arrival of 2 males in a red kayak at 1217. There would be no DOCARE response, but thankfully, the UH Sub guys were just coming back from a training session, and one of the guys, Colin (the father of Sadie, for whom Sadie is named) raced out there on a zodiac and advised the guys to get the hell off the island, just in the nick of time. as they were headed toward Kekoa, and Mom & the kid. Thanks Colin....Ya' Done Good !!. And in behalf of the rest of us on the blog we thank you Colin! I still say a solar intercom system is needed out there.... just as some one is close to one of the seals... they look up and the voice speaks up... excuse me .... get the hell off my island !!! it could happen!
At 1237 Gayle called with the report of Kaiwi (RK96) at Lanai Lookout. That report made the Nani ID a no brainer on RI.
At 0826 Team Billand called with the report of Kerby (RW08), Kolohe (RW22), and THE Benny (RE74) together at Maili Point. To the casual reader these are just 3 names. For the gnarly ol' veterans , these 3 have not been in the same place, at the same time since 2008. Allow me a couple of sentences of nostaligia. Kerby was born on Rabbit Island, Kolohe was relocated , along with Hoku, to RI in 2008. Though I will never be able to prove it, I suspect that Kerby followed Benny to Ka'ena Point (at 5 months old) in August of that year. Except for a couple of quick visits home, Kerby has forsaken his RI roots. Kolohe , who had been translocated to RI at weaning, has remained an RI guy until his sudden move to Maili Pt, a couple of days ago. The Billands and I have spent the day with a case of the "warm fuzzies" knowing that history .
Hmmm didn't realize bad boy benny was back on the island in 2008 leading Kerby astray... but I am aware both Kerby and Kolohe turn 5 in the next few weeks... they're all grown up!
At 1450 Team Billand reported Pohaku (R028) at Paradise Cove.
At 1555 the Billands found M&M (R020), and 2 long lost posse people, the Sparks' at White Plains. Unfortunately, the Sparks' were just passing through on their way to Tim's next assignment.
Wow blast from the past !! Brenda and Tim spent many hours watching over our Oahu seal clan... they spent many many hours pup sitting over the years too! Bet they felt good seeing how well the "kids" are doing.
At 1614 the Billands found Kermit (R012) at #1811, Nimitz Cottages.
Bad dudes on Rabbit Island
