12/30/2010 DB Dailies

On my first pass through the SE quadrant I found nutin' , but when I got to the Makapuu Overview at 0905 I found what would prove to be Kolohe just hauling out to Rocky Right Beach, at the right end of Rabbit Island.

I did 3 thorough checks of Kaupo Beach Park , looking for Makana, to no avail, and I met posse member Stacy there , who had also done a check, and was batting zero.

When I got to Makai Pier at 1015 I was looking at Kolohe, when I noticed a little head popping up from time to time on the other side of Kolohe. When the little critter moved into view I immediately saw that beautiful N27 bleach, and knew that I'd found Makana. He and Kolohe spent the rest of the day there.

On a pan at 1207 I found Duke just hauling out to Right Middle Cliff and RI. He would remain there the rest of the day.

Team Billand called at 0936 to report Pohaku (RO28) , once again at Maili Point.  At 1014 they found Kermit, fronting #1706 at White Plains.  At 1202 they called to say that Benny was just hauling out, fronting #1708 at WP.  Once again came a Billand call at 1343 with the report of Ewa Girl just hauling out fronting #1760 at WP.

Marilyn did the Ka'ena Point trek today, and found M&M and Kerby at the end of the world.  She also encountered the 20 car circus that was Barack and gang heading to Mokuleia for a barbeque.

I got a call from a posse member at 1510, and another call at about the same time from Eric Tong, both of which were about an animal at Malaekahana, with lots of teenagers crowded around it. Before any response could be mounted , my posse member called back at 1530 to advise that the animal had been run off. Eric's contact is said to be forwarding photos so maybe we'll luck out and get an ID.
Dera called at 0937 with the report of an animal at Kaimana Beach, in Waikiki. Posse member Stacy happened to be with me when the call came in, and good soul that she is, volunteered to make the run to Waikiki. She would confirm the Rocky ID at 1056. Colleen would likewise confirm the Rocky ID at 1210.

Speaking of photos, I have a thing to go to this evening so I have to get the dailies out early. Please check da' blog in the morning for Billand photos. (sorry for the late update everyone, I had internet issues last evening right in the middle of updating).

Val called from Molokai to report 4 animals found on their trek, and she asked if I had info an RA20, which they had found on the trek. When I got back to my computer I looked it up and lo and behold RA20 is the daughter of R5AY, born on Kauai (Larsen's Beach) on 6-7-09. This is the first reported sighting of the little girl, and it's on Molokai !! Val....Ya' Done Good..................again !!!

12/30/2010 Team Billand Reports In

Hi Blog Lady,
First of all Happy New Year!!!  Happy New Year to you and Rob... and may the two of you continue to be blessed this year.!
DB is out, he asked if I could send the photos to you. We had an exciting day at White Plains and Maili.
Our first seal was R028 snoozing alone at Maili Pt. She looked so peaceful.
Next was Kermit on his 6th day at White Plains cottage 1706. He was comotose himself, but, later moved down to the waters edge. No molt spotted yet.

We were on our way to the H1, when we got a call from the lifeguard, a seal was hauling up at Plains, but not in Kermits perimeter. He was at his own cottage at 1708. We rushed back to the Plains to
find.......BENNY RE74, up near the Fence area of the cottage. We quickly signed him off and roped both sides of the area. There was no room for people to pass him . We allowed folks to pass in front as Benny was way up. That went well for a while. But Benny moved down to the waters edge and we had to quickly tell folks to paa around him from above...that was hard. We had folks in front of Benny we had to tell all to GO AROUND NOW. And wouldnt you know the kid moved up AGAIN.
Down at Kermits Area, he had also moved down to the waters edge, so we had to fix that perimeter too. Get folks to go AROUND.
Again the life guard came scrambbling down to us, a third seal was trying to haul in at Plains near the showers this time. But too many folks crowding it, so it kept going towards Benny, then passing KErmit. Finally, as I was following the seal, it stopped, turned into cottage 1760. It was Ewa Girl, and boy she is plump again. Looking just beautiful and her N2 bleach was perfectly showing while she was swimming about, running from all those people. I called Robert who was with Benny, I needed signs, folks are coming. We got her signed off, no ropes. Her area was on a steep incline, full of erosion from large waves and storms.
It was nuts out there and so we called Dana Jones and she got One volunteer...Jim Brown. Both came out to Plains, we are so very grateful for the help. And they got to meet our abandoned dogs who came out of the bushes. Any one interested in these sweet dogs, let me know.
The End......B

12/30/2010 Benny and Ewa Girl

Having three seals in three separate roped areas was a little difficult. Glad we got two people to help, Jim Brown and Dana Jones. We did the best we could and then, we called for help. I guess each seal was about 300 to 400 ft. apart. Lots of walking back and forth. Great exercise, but after a while, we got tired. = B

12/30/2010 Abandon Beach Dogs a note from Barb

There are two of the abandoned dogs.....cant anyone help to adopt them??? We been watching them roam plains since Sept. We feel so bad for them, looking for food and water. It sure would be heaven if a good soul would take them and love them....they can be such good little babies. The larger dog is shy, seems abused! But he is handsome...a brindle.

I hope if we put them on the BLOG, we could get some help from ANYBODY?????????????

12/29/2010 DB Dailies

At 0805, from Makai Pier, I found M38 just hauling out, 100 ft right of 3BS on Rabbit Island. When I got back to Makai Pier at 1000 I found that M38 had been joined by Sadie and Kolohe. On a pan at 1026 I became aware that there was a critter amongst the water front rocks fronting 3BS. It would prove to be Duke. I'd missed him on previous pans. From Kaupo Beach Park at 1346 I found that RIP had joined M38, Kolohe and Sadie at the right end of the beach.

I did several checks of Kaupo Beach Park, and joined Dera , Chad & Sean for a few more, in hopes of doing a tagging mission on Makana. Alas..... nobody told Makana. We found nobody.

Team Billand reported Kermit fronting #1706 at White Plains at 0713. At 1065 they found Benny and RO28 at Maili Point.

Responding to a Dera call, they found Irma at Oneula Place, Ewa Beach at 1656.

Colleen called at 1642 to ask if I was aware of an animal at Magic Island. I was completely unaware, of the haul out, and since I'd been with Dera, I'm pretty sure she didn't know anything about it either. Colleen just happened to be there on a family outing and made the discovery. Colleen would confirm the Rocky ID at 1703. She was in her usual trough location, and the lifeguards had taped her off. Thank You Colleen !!!

As a side note, the Billands had reported an animal swimming by WP yesterday, town bound. They subsequently checked IRQ and EB but found nothing. We joked about Rocky heading for town. It looks like that is exactly who it was.
That doesn't look like Kermit to me

12/28/2010 DB Dailies

At 0735 I found M38 up in the grass, 80 ft right of 3BS on Rabbit Island. When I got back to Makai Pier I found that the cast had increased. M38 was now up in the grass with Sadie, 100 ft right of 3BS, and a gang of three, Duke, Kolohe and Buster were high on the beach behind Seal Rock Inlet. M38 would later move over to join them. I never got a total look at Buster, so I'll hold off on a percentage for D#16. What I did see was clean.

At 1253, RIP hauled out 30 ft right of 1BS at the left end of the beach.

Despite many looks at Kaupo Beach Park through the day, it would be 1404 before I would find N27 tucked into the base of the Naupaka, on the pier end of the beach . There were never any calls about him. I've decided to call him Makana (Gift), since we met on Christmas Day on Rabbit Island. It seems right to me. He would depart at 1627.

Team Billand called at 0940 with the report of RO28 at Guard Rails, Maili Pt. At 1015 they found Kermit, fronting #1706 at White Plains.
At 1202 they reported Irma at Wind Sock, Kalaeloa Beach.

At 1750, responding to a Dera call, they found Benny at Makaha Beach. Dera called at 1025 with the report of R5AY at Laniakea Beach. The Honu folks were taking care of her.
