5/11/2010 DB Dailes

At 0636, from the Makapuu Overview, I found what would prove to be Duke, up in the grass behind Seal Rock Inlet, at the right end of Rabbit Island. When I got back to Makai Pier on my 2nd look, he was already beginning to move down. I would lose sight of him behind the water front rocks at 1108, and with the rising tide there was no place for him to hide at that location so I assumed he had departed. Sure enough at 1131 Duke hauled out at the far left end of the beach, where he remained the rest of the day.

At 1315 , M38 hauled out to the left end and headed straight for Duke. He was in an agressive mode today so there was lots of climbing on, and general harrassment. He managed to log roll Duke into the water, but the whole time Duke was taking no crap from him. Duke is approaching his 1st molt, and probably isn't feeling all that hot, so he was definitely not in the mode for this. He managed to escape from M38 and moved back up on to the beach where he remained.

M38 tired of the whole thing and entered the water at 1327. I managed to follow his swimming head as he worked his way to the right, stopping to head bob at all the regular haul out spots, looking for his next victim. He hauled out to Seal Rock Inlet at the right end of the beach at 1346. After a few bellows he settled down to snooze mode.

Responding to a Dera call, Team Billand found 4DF at Hau Bush, Ewa Beach at 0940.  Also responding to a Dera call they found Irma at Wind Sock, Kalaeloa Beach at 1112.  Apparently, Dera was in the Ka'ena Point area today, but did not go to the point. A passerby did however, tell her that there were 3 seals there.

Great action shots between Duke and M38
