HMMA Update from September 28th

At 0500 Steve checked in with a report of Rocky (RH58) at Kaimana Beach. Rocky was making her way toward the shoreline and by 0735 she departed. At 0530 a report came in about a seal at Puka Pants Beach. Barbara could not make an ID due to the seal's departure. At 0806 Don received word that a Honey Girl (R5AY) was in Hauula across from the fire station. Diane responded and confirmed the Honey Girl ID. At 0909 a report came in about a small swimming seal at McKenzie Beach at Turtle Bay. Dr. Tom believed the seal to be Lei Ola. Karen T. responded and confirmed the Lei Ola ID. Lei Ola remained at the same location when Don and Zoe checked on her at 1454. At 0927 a report came in about an unknown seal swimming in the bay at Turtle Bay near the pool side of the hotel. Karen T. responded but found no seal. At 1556 a report came in about a seal in Laie across from PCC. Don responded and found Ipo (RI37). At 1739 a report came in about a swimming seal in Kuilima Cove. No ID could be made at the time of initial sighting.

 At 1012 Don checked in via email with a report of RK36 at Hidden Beach at Kaena Point. He was making the trek out with Zoe. At 1305 Zoe checked in via email with a report of Kaena (RO40) and RW02 in the tide pools at Kaena Point. Diane checked in via email. She responded to a text by Don for R5AY at Hau'ula across from fire station. At 0930, Honey Girl was high up on the beach and visible from the street. Honey Girl was still there when Diane was relieved by Jennifer at 1400.

 Karen T. checked in via email from McKenzie Pool. Karen responded to a report of a seal at McKenzie Pool at 0952. Dr. Tom reported that he had seen a bright red object in the seal's mouth. When Karen arrived the object was gone and she was foraging normally, emerging once with a stick. Lei Ola hauled out at 1025.

9/28/2016 DB's Dailies:

When I arrived for my first Rabbit Island look at 0825 I found the same molting, unknown J/M at Seal Rock Inlet, and an unknown J/F at 1BS. The female would enter the water at 0830 and I did not see her again today. The male entered the water at 0922 and hauled out to the same location at 1032. His D#3 molt is 15%.

 Team Billand checked in at 0530 with the report of an U/U at Puka Pants Beach, Nanakuli. The animal would depart at 0557. No ID was possible, in the dark.

 At 0810 they reported Kekoa (RK72) at Maili Point. RIP (RR70) was the Billand’s next find at Makua Cliffs.

 On her way to Ka’ena Point , Barbara reported Ka’ale (RH32) at the 20Min mark on the west side KP trail. She He was still there on Barbara’s trek back.

 At Ka’ena Point she found RW02 & Ka’ena (RO40). The boys would have words and apparently RW02 departed, because on her trip back Barbara found RW02 at the 30Min mark.

HMMA Update from September 27th

At 0914 a report came in about a seal at Kaihalulu Beach. Jennifer responded and ID'ed Lei Ola (RH48). Lei Ola remained sleeping at 1624 via Dr. Tom. At 1020 a report came in about a seal at Paradise Cove. Brittany and Karen responded and found found Pohaku (RO28). At 1122 a report came in about a seal at Hanauma Bay. DB later confirmed the Kolohe ID (RW22). At 1320 a report came in about a seal at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Colleen responded and ID'ed Kaiwi (RK96). At 1636 A report came in about a seal at the Elbow. Dr. Tom confirmed Holokai (RG40) by tag. Holokai remained sleeping. Susie checked in via email from Paradise Cove.

Susie was dispatched to relieve another volunteer. When she arrived Pohaku was sleeping on the rocks most of the time. At 1810 a 2nd seal swam up from the south side of the rocks, the seal crossed the small area of beach then left to the north. At 1845 Pohaku entered the water to the heading south. No ID was made on the second seal at the time of sighting. After evaluating photos the seal is believed to be Benny (RE74). ID was made by the facial scaring and scar on top of the seal's head.

9/27/2016 DB's Dailies: J/M@Rabbit Island, Kolohe@Toilet Bowl, Hanauma Bay, Pohaku@Campbell Industrial Park, Kekoa@Maili Pt, Holokai@Turtle Bay, RW02&RL42@Makua Cliffs,

At 0800 I arrived at Makai Pier to find a likely looking rock up in the tall grass behind Seal Rock Inlet on Rabbit Island. At 0813 the rock changed position. The rock began moving down out of the vegetation and it became apparent that it was little juvenile male. His D#2 molt is 5%. He would be the only RI resident today.

 At 1124 Hanauma Bay security posse member Melissa called to advise that there was an animal at Toilet Bowl. When my tired bones got down there at 1209 I found Kolohe (RW22).

 The highlight of my day came at 1425 with a call from Diane G., advising that she had just spoken with a woman who reported having seen Kea (RN46) at the Makapuu tide pools on Sunday afternoon ! The ID was by tag. I had just seen him at Rabbit Island the day before, when he stopped by to show me his 40% molt.

 Team Billand reported Pohaku at Campbell Industrial Park at 0630. She would enter the water at 0702 and after a bit of foraging departed at 0730.

 At 0823 the Billands found Kekoa (RK72) at Maili Point. RW02 & RL42 were their next finds, together at Makua Cliffs at 1026.

 Dr. Tom sent shots of his find of Holokai (RG40) at the Elbow, Turtle Bay at 1640.
