2/25/2015 Nani Identified on Moku Nui

Mystery solved.... out Lanikai mystery guest is Nani.... this girl likes hanging out in this neighborhood, when she wants to be seen. Where she goes when she's not here is still a mystery.

2/25/2015 DB's Dailies: Kainoa@RM38@RI, Kea@BH, Haupu&Kolohe@PC, Nihoa@Maipalaoa, R5AY&Pup, NS

At 0920 , on my first look at Rabbit Island I found what would prove to be Kainoa (RN04) in the Morning Glory, 60 ft right of 3BS, and RM38 on the water front rocks on the right side of Seal Rock Inlet.

At 0959, posse member Bob Ubersax called with the report of an animal in the cove on the Sandy Beach side of the Blowhole Lookout. There had been nobody there on my previous 3 checks. When I arrived at 1010 I found Kea (RN46). He has remained the rest of the day. Marilyn&Gayle did the late check. Kea remained at dark.

At 0957 the Billands called advising that they had received word of an animal at Paradise Cove. Upon arrival at 1022 they confirmed the Haupu (RB24) ID.

At 1058 they reported the arrival of Kolohe (RW22) to join Haupu at PC.

At 1402 the Billands received word of an animal at the Maipalaoa Canal. When they arrived at 1440 they found a hauled out Nihoa (R912). Madhatter advised that Nihoa departed at 1811, due to Idiots !

I’ve saved the best for last. The highlight of the day was a DanaText at 1430 advising that Honey Girl (R5AY) had just pupped on the North Shore!!! This is pup #9 for this girl !! Shots are from the NOAA Facebook site, unknown photograph. Well.... it’s not exactly not last.

In the Yesterday’s News department, I got an email from Nicholas Vargas, a member of Ama’s DOFAW (Dept. Of Forestry&Wildlife)crew. He provided shots of none other that Nani (RK60/61) on Moku Nui on 2-23-15.

I had been at the pier since 0838, and done tons of pans of the Rabbit Island before discovering a likely looking rock on the left end rock flats. It would prove to be an U/F. She was only partially visible all day and no ID was possible.

At 1006 , what would prove to be Buster (RV08) hauled out left of Seal Rock Inlet, and would remain on the water front rocks all day.

At 1227 on a routine pan I discovered that I had a new arrival, partially visible amongst the rocks to the right of Seal Rock Inlet. I was able to determine that it was a male, with a new coat, but nothing more was possible so U/M it is.

At 1246 Kainoa (RN04) hauled out, 80 ft right of 3BS.

At 1001 Team Billand found Pohaku (RO28) at Maili Point, with RIP (RR70) sneakin’ up behind her. They would have words and both departed at 1015, only to return at 1307.

At 1055 they found Haupu (RB24) at Lagoon #2, KoOlina. A DanaText at 1822 advised that Haupu had just departed.

In the Yesterday’s News department, Kimo Smith sent shots from The End of the World, from his Ka’ena Pt trek yesterday.

In yesterday’s blog I included shots from Rikki Goble, and I identified an animal as Luana. I have an “Oooops” to fess’ up to. TracyMail, as well as Kimo’s report both clarified the animal as Kaikaina (RL57). Kimo found Ka’ena (RO40) at Hidden Beach, and RW02, BG(R303)& Kaikaina (RL57) at the point. Whew ! At least it wasn't me this time... I'm usually the one who makes all the mistakes!

While on the subject of news from previous days.... I was told there was a hotline call over the weekend of a seal "lolling" off Lanikai beach... I asked several kayak guides I know and a few people I know in the neighborhood if they knew anything.... a couple of people did see a seal around Lanikai ( not hauled out) over the weekend and they all said it seemed fine. Kayak guide told be there was a seal on Mokulua Island on Monday.... away from the main beach up by queens' bath too far for anyone to get a picture or bother.... seal was described as smaller and no obvious markings. Not much to go on but a U/U in and around Lanikai.
