07/04/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies HAPPY 4TH OF JULY !

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn.  I did speak with Team R&B today and they are taking a well deserved break from the beaches for a bit.  I look forward to their return but I do support their getting some R&R, and spending time with their family.

Marilyn observed Rabbit Island in between passing showers.  There were only two seals on island today and thankfully no humans.

At LPB was an unidentified AF, adult size, light female belly with some green and two tags. She has to be the same AF#1 from yesterday. She seemed fidgety today, she rolled over a number of times, headed down to the water, pushing her head through the sand several times. She would then head back up the beach.

Between 3BS and SRI, was weaner P04 Manana.  As usual she was mostly in sleep mode on her back. Her light female belly, LRF tag were visible, also she did not have a nb on her LFF. ( so it's not P01).

07/03/2021 Saturday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn.   As of this posting I have not heard from Team R&B, thy may have had plans or just crashed from a long day.

A group of us met up with Marilyn this afternoon at the pier. (Diane, Gayle, Tammy, and Tracy)  We gathered to commemorate the passing of DB four years ago today. Marilyn said she was grateful for the lasting friendships formed among DB's posse of monk seal lovers. I will add that some of the best friends I have made has been through this posse. 

There were three seals on Rabbit Island between 1:30 to 2:30.  Along with the seals were three people who arrived on island with two kayaks.

On LPB was an AF#1, adult size, lighter female belly with some green and at least one tag.

At middle cliff area was AF#2, adult size, darker female belly, unsure about tags. AF2 was scared off the beach when one of the three people on island walked near her. She left soon after.

At SRI was who Marilyn believes to be weaner P04. Lighter female belly, did not see any NB or tags. She never changed position during the viewing session.

07/02/2021 Friday Monk Seal Dailies

Once again they arrived at the bay early morning. Today it took a while before they spotted RL20 Kalua, as he was pretty far out.  When they went back later, again it took them a bit to find him. He popped up and the was still foraging.  While out watching for Kalua they did see the dolphins being very active and a beautiful honu.

At another west side location a seal came in and was quite alert. They were able to ID RH76 Kala who is looking very pretty even when the waves were hitting her. They noticed she kept scratching her mouth, they looked carefully there was nothing there. However she did have a sneeze-a-thon so maybe she was itchy.

Team R&B arrived at the cliffs and there was seal. They were surprised to finally ID Nalu R3CX, as they don't see him that often.  He was there resting alone, looking good and healthy.

While viewing Nalu they happen to look over to the left and saw two seals from afar.  Despite the distance they made the walk. Halfway there they see the seals reacting to a dog, so they tried to hurry before the seals got in the water. They were able to see it was RL42 Leia and RN14 Kalani. They watched as both seals slowly swam away.  The woman and the dog left and that was that!

07/01/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

 Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕.   See Marilyn's Rabbit Island update in part two of the dailies.

They arrived at the bay very early being it was still kind of dark. They wanted to see what RL20 Kalua was up to this early. Once again he was busy foraging going all over the place. He got something big near the jetty, big enough he had to put up a fight. He went out further by a sailboat, and unfortunately that was the last they saw of him.

After losing sight of Kalua they headed over to the outfall and there was Mr Kaale RH32 foraging in the outfall. He was very busy, chasing fish, a small school was in the area. The fishermen weren't so luck they fish weren't biting for them. Only Kaale was the lucky one catching his own fish and not stealing from the fishermen.

Team R&B checked several locations looking for seals, at one location they stopped to watch the dolphins.  They has a conversation with a lifeguard, who asked if they saw the two seals? He gave them the information and they left to go check it out.

They were shocked and thrilled to find and ID the male RK72 Kekoa Alii. The female was Auakai RL12, looking a little thin and green. Other than her thin weaning weight she looks fine. Kekoa made an advance and she let him know to back off ! He is a gentleman and did back off and slept near her the entire visit. 

Team R&B stayed over an hour and talked with the people that were around. They called the hotline and waited, but no one arrived so they left. Both seal were still on shore sleeping  when they left. If they had signs they would have posted a few.

07/01/2021 (part 2) Thursday Marilyn's Rabbit Island Update

 I viewed Rabbit Island from Makai Pier from about 12:55 - 2:10 pm. I was sunny and breezy.

There were two HMS on RI today.

In the Middle Cliff area was an adult female with two tags, a scar on the rear left side and I think the the seal is beginning to molt on the face. This is likely RF34 Pua based on the scar and female belly. It's been approximately 8 weeks since RF34 weaned P01/RP24 Mohala, so this could be her.

Near 3BS, P04 was hauling out when I started viewing. She moved up and wrapped herself around a rock for a while, then she moved a bit away from the rock. She was ID'd by her weaner size and coloration, a tag in her LRF and no nb on her LFF. She entered the water again around 2 pm and I saw her briefly in a nearshore tide pool.
