08/03/2017 Monk Seal Dailies:

Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Posse Pals, Tammy T, Gayle, and Tony.  Thank you all for your continued support.

Team Billand spent the first part of the morning looking for Pohaku and came up empty until they hit Nimitz Beach at 7:45 am. Sure enough there was Pohaku with Benny right by her side.  Team Billand called the hotline right away and gave them detail directions to the site. While they waited for HMAR volunteer to arrive they did outreach and made a informational sign. Team Billand departed at 9:40 when HMAR arrived.

Team Billand found RL42 at a new spot at Makua Cliffs, she was there alone resting peacefully.

A big surprise at Kahe Team Billand saw an animal who was larger than Ka'ale, after carefully looking they were able to read the tags N/14/N15.... It was a Molokai Boy!  It's been a while since he's been sighted on Oahu! He is big and green!

After ID'ing RN14 they noticed Ka'ale to the right tucked in the corner. Two seals one area, separate locations.

Posse pal Tammy (half of Team T&D) was out at Ka'ena Point. She had a busy day with a whole cast of characters. She found Luana at Hidden Beach, Ka'ena at his pool, RIP at the main pool.... but the big surprise was a new visitor from Kauai bleach mark V18, tagged V26/27.  If anyone has more info on this critter please feel free to share.  Always fun to have a new critter.

Gayle found Right Spot at Kaupo Beach ( ya sure! I was out there yesterday..... and she shows up again today!)

Tony sent a couple of photos of Kaiwi at the Outrigger and Rocky with Kaimana back on shoreline after their adventure to the Natatorium.

8/2/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: (part II) Video of Kaimana and Rocky

8/2/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Pohaku&Benny@Campbells, Ka'ale@Kahe, RL42@Makua Cliffs, Rocky&PO3@Kaimana, UU@Rabbit Island

Aloha Good People, Today's Dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Posse Pals Gayle, and Tony. I had to head over to Hawaii Kai today so on my way decided to make a few stops and check out the east side.... unfortunately I came up empty.  I checked with Gayle who had been by in the morning and she found no one either.  I guess Right Spot took a break today.

Team Billand went out super early after getting a 5:30 am call about two seals at Ko'Olina, they were on site in about 10 minutes only to find the seals left the beach. They were able to track them, lost sight and then headed towards Campbells.

They spotted both seals entering the area, fighting and vocalizing. Pohaku (RO28) was being pursued by Da Benny (RE74). She fought back and hauled up on the rocks, he followed, both still vocalizing.
Once they were both up on the rocks things settled down, and Benny kept one eye open watching her every move.

Ka'ale (RH32) once again was at Kahe. He's very green, hookless and resting peacefully.

Team Billand's last find for the day was RL42 at Makua Cliffs looking healthy and beautiful in her new coat. Other than getting splashed by a wave she snoozed the day away.

Both Gayle and Tony captured Rocky (RH58) and Kaimana (PO3).  Gayle sent some cute videos of mom and pup having some water time.  For sure Kaimana is changing, her muzzle is changing to grey, and her coat has a reddish brown tint.  She is starting to look like a tick ready to burst.  (okay she's much cuter than a tick but you get the picture).

Gayle also went back to the eastside this afternoon and took a peek at Rabbit Island.  One UU on island.

8/1/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Ka'ale RH32, & RIP RR70 @ Maili, RL42 @ Makua Cliffs, Right Spot (R016) @ Kaupo Beach, 2 U/U @ Rabbit Island

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and our Posse Pal Gayle.

Team Billand found Ka'ale (RH32) and RIP (RR70)  together on the rocks at Maili.  Apparently RIP was relentless and tormenting Ka'ale, by getting closer and closer, each time Ka'ale would turn and bark at him.  Ka'ale tried lifting his flipper to get RIP to back off but as Barbara put it... "RIP didn't care, he got so close to put his big fat head on top of Ka'ale".

Barbara spent 2 and 1/2 hours with the two of them and during that entire time did not see any hooks or fishing line. She texted NOAA to report her findings.

On the 3rd check they were both high on the rocks, Ka'ale still trying to get away from RIP. RIP in his persistence galumphed up to him and put his head on Ka'ale's hind flippers so he had a hard time moving.  Boys will be boys !!

And then there is RL42 who was alone at Makua Cliffs resting peacefully.

Posse Pal Gayle found Right Spot back at Kaupo Beach and two U/Us on Rabbit Island.  Gayle took a guess that the adult on the left side of Rabbit Island could possibly be Sadie coming back for her molt. (she's been gone for about 6 weeks so the timing makes sense).

Honestly, times like this makes me realize how much we depended on DB and his knowledge for dates, birthdays, due dates, and molting schedules, not to mention his ability to ID an animal.  Oh how I miss him!
