9/3/2015 DB's Dailies: Nani,Aukai&Cass@RI, Kaiwi@CW, Pohaku@Nanakuli, La'akea&Holokai@Turtle Bay, RL42&Ka'ena@KP

On my first look at Rabbit Island, at 0705, I found Aukai (RL12) in the company of a smaller animal, at the log, 40 ft left of 1BS, up in the Morning Glory. Though it would take until 1308 to finally make the ID on the small animal, I’m stoked to report that it would prove to be CASS !!!! (RG06). She has been MIA since 8-13-15 (19 days). It was a difficult call because her body shape has begun to change since I last saw her. She is no longer the Chubette, little weaner. She has now begun to lose some weight, and has lengthened out a bit. I finally got to see her signature light spot, posterior, right side, and knew the little girl was home !

At 1028 Nani (RK60) hauled out to the left end of the beach. All 3 would remain the rest of the day.

Gayle called at 1246 with the report of Kaiwi (RK96), once again at China Walls. Thank you Gayle !!

Team Billand called at 0617 with the report of Pohaku (RO28) at Depot’s , Nanakuli. Mahalos to Melina, Charlene&Kelly ! Pohaku departed at 1800, per Kelly.

Melanie Chun was on weaner duty today at Turtle Bay. At 1257 she checked in with the report of La’akea (RK83) at Right Spot’s Spot, TB. No word yet on her weaner find.

DanaMail at 1429 advised that a hooked animal has been reported at Ka’ena Point. There is no other info. Tracy called at 1730 on the way back from Ka’ena Point. She reported that RL42 had visible Damashi hooks near her mouth. No further investigation could be done today. RL42 departed in the company of Ka’ena. Another attempt will be made tomorrow.

9/1/2015 DB's Dailies: Buster@HB, Nani@RI, Kaiwi@CW, Pohaku@Nanakuli, Holokai@Turtle Bay

As I stood at the overlook at Hanauma Bay on my usual morning check I spied a swimming animal cruising the beach front from west to east (right to left),stopping for a partial haul out occasionally, but continuing on, and heading out the “backdoor channel. I lost in on the outside of the reef. I went home to look at the photos and could confirm the Buster (RV08) ID , by a small scar on top of his head. Though I checked all the coastline multiple times during the day, I did not see him again. Nor did Gayle.

At 0722 I found what would prove to be Nani (RK60) in the Morning Glory, behind Seal Rock Inlet, on Rabbit Island. She was still there, but had moved down onto the beach on my 1052 return to Makai Pier. She would be the only RI resident today.

At 1254 Gayle advised that she’d seen Kaiwi (RK96) at China Walls.

At 0608 Team Billand made the first call on Pohaku (RO28) at Nanakuli. She would depart a 1009, then haul out again down the beach at 1225, depart at 1300, then haul out again at 1334 at Depot’s , Nanakuli. Thanks to Debbie & Chrissy. It was yet another troubled day in Nanakuli.

According to the Billands there was a report of an animal at Paradise Cove, however it was gone when they arrived. No further info.

Volunteer Jon Gelman sent a couple of shots of Holokai (RG40) from his Turtle Bay shift today. The “goop” that had been observed on his lower lip seems to be gone today. Thanks Jon !

8/31/2015 DB's Dailies: Nani&Aukai@RI, Kaiwi@CW, Pohaku@Nanakuli, Luana@Mokuleia, Ola,La'akea&Holokai@TB

On the road at 0600. I found nothing on my first pass through the quadrant. I was most interested in getting to China Walls early since we are facing re-paving, and therefore limited to no parking anywhere close. At 0645 I Kaiwi was not at her usual hangout. Thankfully, Gayle made an 1154 recheck and she was there. Due to lack of movement there was no way to get a percentage, but she looks like a bare, naked lady to me. Hopefully, tomorrow will provide more info. Thank You Gayle !!

When I got back to Makai Pier at 0900 I found Nani (RK60) snoozin’ on the water front rocks , 80 ft right of 3BS on Rabbit Island. Aukai (RL12) would join her at 0937. They were the RI cast for today.

Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) at 0605 once again at Nanakuli. As of yesterday she is 100% molted. She would depart at 0915, only to haul out again down the beach a bit at Depot’s in Nanakuli, at 1107. Thanks to Deb for the help. It the usual complement of idiots.

At 0647 Lesley called with the report of Luana (RN58) in Mokuleia.

At 0849 DanaTxt reported Ola (RG03) at Elbow Beach, and Holokai (RG40) at the Keiki Pool. Diane Terai would report the departure of Ola at 1007.

Our pal Val sent today’s RG58 encounter. Thanks Val !

Thanks to Jason O’Rourke for the Yesterday’s News contribution of shots from his shift with Pohaku in Nanakuli.
