5-1-2014 DB's Dailies: Sadie&Pup, Kainoa&U/F@RI, Aukai@LL, R018,RIP,M&M@WP, Pohaku,Kolohe&Haupu@PC,Buster@GR, La'akea&Meli@TB

The Jurassic Park troops owned Makai Pier for about half the day. It was an extras cast of 300, along with 100 or so crew and tons of trucks and equipment. I guess Rabbit Island is home to seals and Dinosaurs ! We shall see. My morning observations were from the bleachers at Kaupo Beach Park, but I moved back to my plush sky box once the zoo left.

The Rabbit Island cast was Sadie & Pup (RB12)(D#28) starting at 2BS, but hauling out after a long swim session to a spot 80 ft right of 3BS at 1231 for a feed and a snooze. She is definitely showing the kid the territory.

On a pan at 0804 I found Kainoa (RN04) up in the Morning Glory, 70 ft right of 3BS. He would later move down to cool off. He appears to have full use of his LFF, and his CC wound has the look of the usual healed CC scar.

At 0930 what continues to be an U/F hauled out to the far left end of the beach. No tags, and no visible markers.

At 1307 Melanie called with the report of Aukai (RL12) at the Lanai Lookout Cove. Thanks Melanie.... Ya’ Done Good !!

At 0646 Team Billand reported R018 fronting #1706, and RIP (RR70) fronting Tower#2 at White Plains.

M&M (R020) would arrive at 0738 . She hauled out to RIP, and both would enter the water for a near shore frolic. At 0859 they would both haul out to join R018.

At 1134 the Billands received word of 3 animals at Paradise Cove. They would prove to be Pohaku (RO28) on the reef, and Kolohe (RW22)&Haupu (RB24) together on the beach. Kolohe & Haupu would relocate to Lani’s

At 1134 the Billands recieved word of an animal in a canal in Waianae, reported by the HFD. Debbie responded but found nobody.

At 1410 Team Billand found Buster (RV08) at Guard Rails, Maili.

Afternoon email from Vera Cober brought shots of La’akea (RK82)at Right Spot’s Spot and Meli (RF20)at the Elbow, from her Turtle Bay trek today.

5-1-2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Trek

Kimo Lyman and I did the Ka'ena Point hike and monitoring.

Our first surprise was to find R303 "BG" rolling at the entrance of her pool. On our way out we checked on her but she was no longer there.

At the end of the Runway the Trio: RO40 "Ka'ena", RW02 "Kauai PV" and RW08 "Kerby" were all together sleeping.

On our way out they were still there but all 3 moving around because they were being washed by the upcoming tide.

The second surprise was to see little TEMP 402 juvenile male hauling out beside the Main Pool. He didn't stay more than 10 minutes than left.
We later found him in another pool towards Mokuleia side. Already dried up and sleeping peacefully.

Back Beach was seal free with some trails in the sand

We checked birth beach Mokuleia for RN58 "Luana" but she wasn't around  - Kimo will go back in the evening to see if she showed up.
Aloha,  Lesley

4-30-2014 DB's Dailies: Sadie&Pup, U/F , U/U @ RI, Kermit@CIP, Benny@Makaha, Buster&Nihoa@GR

Today was one of those landmark moments in this year’s Sadie pupping event. To date all activity has been at the far left end of Rabbit Island. Today for the first time I arrived to find Mom&Pup doing at feed at 2BS ! After some snoozin’ they would enter the water for a swim session and at 1205 hauled out once more to 2BS. The kid has reached the "michelon tire boy" phase. Rolly Polly and Phat ! The belly has lightened up considerably, but still not enough to make a call from 8/10ths of a mile away. We’re gettin’ there.

At 0938 I became aware of an U/F at the left end flats, as has been the case of late. Still no ID.

At 1048 I found an adult sized U/U with 2 red tags, on the water front rocks of Rocky Right Beach. I did manage to see 2 red tags at some point, but could never confirm a sex or ID.

The Billands called at 0755 to advise that they’d gotten word of an U/U at Paradise Cove. No further word.

At 1035 Barbara’s sister called her to advise that she’d found Kermit (R012) and an U/F at the canal, Campbell Industrial Park. At 1558 they found and confirmed Kermit.

At 1104 Ocean Safety called with the report of an animal at Makaha. Debbie responded and made the Benny (RE74) ID, at 1211. The Billands confirmed at 1352.

At 1447 Team Billand found Nihoa (R912) and another animal at Guard Rails, Maili. They would confirm the other animal as Buster (RV08) at 1522.
