11-2-2013 Lesley Treks out to Ka'ena Point

Today Marilyn, Tia and I hiked Ka'ena Point together.

We started at bb Mokuleia for RN58 "Luana" but we found her half way out to the point just hauling out on Hidden Beach. We were pleased to see that all the sea cucumber goo has come off her face.

Out at the point RO40 "Ka'ena" and RW08 "Kerby" were sleeping peacefully on the Runway.

Earlier just as we were leaving bb Mokuleia, Kimo Lyman and I spotted an odd shape on the beach down at Camp Erdman. We left to the point and Kimo went out to check on it.

He reported that it was indeed a seal and sent a photo. So heading back from our hike we stopped over there and IDed R912 "Nihoa". She's ~ 60/70 %  thru her.

11-1-2013 Maka'iwi Update from Tracy

Good news!  Makaiwi was sighted yesterday on Kauai!  Last sighting of her was Oct.11 on Oahu.  Her dorsal wound looks like it is continuing to heal.  She has not been seen on Kauai since 2009.

11-1-2013 DB's Dailies: Buster@BH, Kaiwi,Aukai,Kainoa,Duke&Nani@RI, Kea@SB, Irma@IRQ, Kermit@NIM

At 0621 I found Buster (RV08) doing 10 minute dives at Blowhole. A couple of hours later I rechecked and he was gone, but in a couple more hours on another re-recheck he was back. Alas on my last check of the day he was once again gone. I saw him nowhere else today.

At 0725 I found Kaiwi (RK96) at 3BS, with Kainoa (RN04) just a little below her. I also found Aukai (RL12), sporting her new bleach, 60 ft right of 3BS. I’m happy to say that Kaiwi has finally begun her molt. At end of day she was a conservative 2% molted.

At 1138 Duke (RA12) & Nani (RK60) hauled out together to 3BS. They would remain there the rest of the day.

At 1154 I found Kolohe (RW22) just hauling out to 1BS on RI.

At 1554 on my umpteenth check I found Kea (RN04) new arrived to the rocks at Crappy Cove, Sandy Beach. I cordoned him off and he remains.

Team Billand called at 0637 to advise that Clay Gates had called to report that Irma (R010) had overnighted at Iroquois Pt.

At 741 the Billands advised that they were following Kermit (R012) as he foraged in the Nimitz Beach area. At 0757 he hauled out to the #1813 pavilion at Nimitz Beach. The Billands advised that Kermit departed at 1508 an resumed foraging activities.

Tracy sent mail with shots, of Makaiwi (R4DF) happy and well on Kauai. Her wound continues to heal. Barbara spoke with her pal Mary and she advised that Makaiwi was at Larsen’s today with Rocky’s pup, and Haupu’s older brother.
