At 0610 I stopped at the outfall and saw a familiar lump in the cordon, and assumed Kea had overnighted again. I continued on. At 0638 Marilyn called “So.... We have RIP “ What !!!!!!!!!! I hurried back to the site, and sure enough the lump hadn’t been Kea at all. In fact , Kea was gone. There before us was RIP with his “N1" clearly visible. Oooops! RIP would leave at 0716, so I picked up the stuff and continued on. I had just arrived at the Blowhole Lookout at 1032, and looked back toward Sandy Beach, to find an animal hauling out to the outfall. I hurried back down and sure enough there was RIP, back again. I redid the cordon . On Marilyn’s 1515 check RIP was gone. In an in depth check of RIP’s entire history I have no incidence of his having hauled out to Sandy Beach....ever , until today. In his 11 years beginning with his RI birth, he has been all over the place out this way but never Sandys. Marilyn also brought up a point. Assuming that he hauled out to check on Kea, we had Irma’s first born and newest born sons at the outfall.
Okay, I have to say the obvious.... Sure would have been nice to see Momma Irma there.... I just keep hoping our beloved Irma comes home.
At 1002 I found Aukai (RL12) at Rabbit Island. She would depart at 1059.
At 1130 one of my HPD posse called to advise that HPD dispatch had a report of a seal at Paiko’s. I found out later that the Hotline had also been called. After a lengthy wild seal chase thru Paiko’s and finding nothing I went to Kuliouou Beach Park, which was nearby, since I’d seen T990 there yesterday.
When I arrived I spoke with Tannya Joaquin, of KHNL News fame, who had seen the animal on a sand bar there, and observed a Speedo clad male pour water on it. Naturally the animal departed at 1100. She could provide no useful ID info. While an U/U is required, my dollar is most certainly on T990.
At 0637 Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) at Nanakuli. Mahalos to Ashley, Laurie 7 Debbie.
At 0920 they reported a swimming head off shore of WP. It would prove to be M&M (R020) but she never hauled out.
Also at 0920 they advised that an animal had been reported at Paradise Cove. Diane T would respond but the animal was gone.
Another call from Lani’s (next door) came in . Diane T responded again, but again no animal.
Marilyn, Lesley, Kimo L, Bruno & Natalie did the end of the world trek. Marilyn called at 0806 with the report of Luana (RN58) at her Mokuleia birth beach. She called again at 1153 from the point where they had found Temp402, a molting RL42, Ka’ena (RO40) and RW02.
Kimo Smith had sent shots of his yesterday’s trek and had the same cast with the exception of Ka’ena. Kimo’s Y/N shots are very helpful in establishing RW02's ID. Today’s shots didn’t provide a lot, however when compared to Kimo’s shots, it’s readily apparent it’s the same animal.
Again in the Yesterday’s News file, Gary Langley sent some shots of Rocky’s girl RF58, on Kauai.
