12/4/2014 DB's Dailies: Kea @ SB, Duke,Kainoa&RM38 @ RI, Haupu@KR, Benny@WP, Makaiwi&Rocky@Diamond Head

Kea was gone on my 0620 check, but at 0742 Barbara V., and myself watched Kea (RN46) haul out to the outfall. Barbara did the east side , while I did the west side of the SPZ. He has remained the rest of the day. Barbara has become a vital member of the Kea posse. I’d be lost without her on the morning SB shift.

On my first look at Rabbit Island at 0655 I found what would prove to be Duke (RA12) & Kainoa (RN04) together, 60 ft left of 1BS in the Morning Glory. Both would move down to cool off, mid morning, allowing the ID.

On my 2nd RI look, at 0915 I found that a 20% molted RM38 had joined the cast, fronting 3BS.

At 0915 Team Billand reported Haupu (RB24) at Kermit’s Reef, Nimitz Cove.

At 1007 they reported a 100% molted Benny (RE74), at Sharbite’s Tree, (1707) White Plains.

At 1039 Colleen’s next door neighbor called with the report of an animal at Diamond Head, two doors east of Colleen’s house. I notified Dana. At 1042 Dana advised that Colleen & Mark Sullivan (NOAA) were responding. It would prove to be Makaiwi (R4DF). Mark got a right shoulder & left mid body, N45 bleach on her.

Both then responded to the report of an animal below the lighthouse at Diamond Head. It would prove to be Rocky (RH58). Mark got an N11 left side, mid body N11 bleach on her, at 1518. Thanks to Colleen & “Bleach Boy” Mark Sullivan........ Ya’ Done Good !!!

I did a Toilet Bowl check in the afternoon, and found no critters, but did fined a tent and campers . Hanauma Bay personnel responded to this Off Limits violation. Awaiting further word.

Actually after we had been at Plains early morning, just waiting for the seals to show...we had just left when we got the call for Benny. When the caller said, THE SEAL IS PRACTICALLY IN MY PORCH..I knew it was Benny.

Dana got Bev Rexrode to respond to the call...THANKS BEV...she put the zone all up herself for the first time..SHE TOLD ME. And she done GREAT. And she stayed with the Benny from 10:30am to 2pm.

We gave up waiting for Benny to show as well as Makaiwi and Haupu. BUT..we thought we would try one more round, and we found Haupu at Nimitz Cove, passed out, enjoying her nap on Kermit's Reef. WE left in a hurry as we were late for the REEF DUTY WATCH.

Unfortunately, NO ONE WAS HOME AT THE REEF...

Went back to Plains at 1pm where Bev was with Benny. After checking on Haupu at Nimitz..we went back to Benny and Bev would leave at 2pm.

While with Benny, I observed him having a SNEEZE ARAMA!!! I never saw any seal sneeze so many times for like 20 min. He was like throwing his head back, lifting his body up, tossing his body right and left. Maybe he got choke on his saliva or something like humans do. And when he would sneeze his whole skin would move forward in wrinkles. He moved up and down, on his left side, right side, then moved all the way up, sneezing like CRAZY. He would move all the way up to the tree...and dug his nose in the earth, tossed the sand high up in the air. Finally...the sneeze athon was much better...wow, that was kind of spooky to watch..didnt quite know, what was happening.

By 4:30pm we left the benny, who was nice and snuggled against the greenery for the night..resting.

And as we got to the car, I saw Benny looking on his tippie toes over the grass, as if to say.."HEY, where you going? Arent you gonna keep watch over me??? Hey?? And then, he went back to sleep. AWE..sweet dreams Benny Boy..seal ya in the am.

Haupu remained at her reef..snoozing the day away in PEACE.

THANKS BEV REXRODE...your work is appreciated!!!!
