7-10-2013 DB's Dailies:

At 0600 Marilyn& I found Irma & Pup (R010) well up on the beach, at mid SPZ, in snooze mode. The first order of business was fence repair , due to extemely strong winds overnight. The winds continued today. At 0659 the critters began to stir and at 0728 they did the first feed. At 0809 they began moving down toward the water line. The pup got in the water in the very shallow shallows. Irma did not get wet. At 0843 the pup moved back up to Mom and from 0847 until 0904 it was feeding time again. They were in snooze mode once again when Diane and I ended our shift. Karen called at 1228 to advise that they had done a shallows water session around 1228.

At 1041 posse member Susan called with the report of "N21" at Spitting Cave. Kimo called seconds later with the same news. It was a confirmed Buster (RV08). When Gayle did her 1130 check, Buster was gone. Right then I began waiting for the other Buster shoe to drop.

I did a Rabbit Island check at 1015 and found nobody home.

At 1220 I found Kaiwi (RK96) snoozin’ at Buster Flats. Kimo reported her departure at 1748.

At 1222, as I was departing Lanai Lookout I got a call from Ocean Safety, reporting an animal just hauling out at Sandy Beach. While we were still on the phone I arrived at Sandy Beach, and confirmed the Buster (RV08) ID. I cordoned him off. At 1723 Gayle called to advise that Buster was departing. I headed to SB to pick up the stuff, but as I passed the outfall at the east end of SB at 1732 I saw the all too familiar "adoring hordes" surrounding poor Buster trying to haul out. I was half way through erecting the cordon again, when he turned and departed, at 1741.

Team Billand checked in at 0609 with the report of RIP (RR70) & Pohaku (RO28) together once again at Paradise Cove.

At 1520 Barbara reported RL42 and an U/M past the runway at Ka’ena Point. She would confirm the Ka’ena (RO40) ID at 1622.

Yikes...who the heck is that lady pointing to the seal?????? I hope some one informed her..SHE WAS WAY TOO CLOSE TO THE SEAL...TSk. Tsk.

Thanks to all the ladies that cared for the seals at Paradise Cove again YESTERDAY!!!! I know its longggg hours, the sun is so hot, very intense heat there...god bless you all.

So now we have, Irma, Makaiwi, Pohaku Haupu, Benny, RIp, R018, and Fat BOY..Kermit all going to KoOlina..whats up with that????? Why????? With thousands of folks out there...I dont get it. Seems seals just want to go some where to rest, no matter where...there will always be ... HUMANS!!!!

Waikiki is a haul out spot too, oh my gosh...poor seals..only trying to SURVIVE and REST. And most times, the spots they choose, ARE ALMOST THE EXACT SAME SPOT. Amazing.
