We've all read how Kelly Girl uses her faithful Seal Mobile and treks around the beaches on the North Shore searching for seals, especially Ua'Maile and La'akea. Kelly also does a tremendous amount of educating and "outreach" on the beach. She has made it her personal mission to make sure everyone and anyone are aware the seals are there and the do's and don'ts of monk seal monitoring.
This evening Kelly sent an email wanting to make sure the couple from Illinois (Les and Connie) received their kudos for looking after Right Spot today. Les also helped Kelly Girl yesterday putting out signs around La'akea. Sooo THANK YOU LES AND CONNIE! As the seal whisperer would say... ya done good.
I would also like to say Thank You Kelly Girl, your hard work is paying off, and your passion is rubbing off on people who want to make a difference. As far as people from the mainland... some of our best volunteers have been seasonal visitors.
Great work all in a Hawaiian monk seal day!

I second that! Kudos Kelly!
I appreciate the Kudos but most of all I just want more people checking Turtle Bay as I have a full time job and am also in Guide Interpretive Training at the zoo.
There was a seal yesterday and one today at Turtle Bay. Les doesnt' no which one it was or if the zone set up was yesterdays and the seal just came back.
People don't always call it in and security is sometimes to busy to put the seals first.
Les and Connie are on vacation so I'm sure they are doing other things and enjoying the island.
All I ask is instead of giving me kudos just give me someone else out at Turtle Bay checking for seals during the week!
Please don't give up on Turtle Bay! It is just as important as White Plains and Kaiwi Cove and any other part of the island. So let's go volunters?
I know you might go out and find nothing, but the day you do you will feel it in your heart that you did the right thing.
Thanks again all for the Kudos:)
Each volunteer does the best they can at the sites they take care of. Some work harder, are more compassionate about protecting the seals.
Each site has it's problems with visitors, with locals, with fishermen, dogs. We all work hard.
Turtle Bay..tourists, long distances, remote areas.
White Plains..small surf beach with a mix of people. But a small waikiki area, crowded to the max. THree day weekends are insane...
Waikiki..seals in a crowded location, but bigger beach to rope off. Volunteers live around area.
KoOlina, beautiful, small sections that the seals go. Visitors on vacation, locals who fish or net, sometimes DOGS. Very hard to find parking!!! Hard to travel on foot with all the equipment. Limited volunteers.
Sandy Beach..got volunteers who will come out and do their best too. They got a Kaiwi Klan. Sweet. They got a zoo to take care of too. Dogs, off roading vehicles, fishermen, surfers, etc.
Each place got its problems..right?
So we just got to keep trying, harder and harder. But it gets really frustrating after a while, watching folks disturb the poor seals, no matter what beach site.
Each place got its problems...but we all take care best we can. We all need a good citizens pat on the back for trying so hard. But that dont always happen either. Each of us sacrifice, some MORE than others.
We are all in the same boat...so..just move forward, take a breath, pray, continue the work for our poor seals.
We did try to go to Turtle Bay, just not good for us old guys, as we got our seals at West end who we truly care about with our souls.
Hugs to all volunteers who are out there...You are all so appreciated.
Barbara
Thank you Barb. Could not add anything else. Everyone does the best they can do and EVERYONE should know how much their love for the animals is appreciated. Mahalo to all.
Wish I were there to help at Turtle Bay. I'll be back June 3. Is Honey Girl "with seal"?
