There isn't much use for the work "hectic" in the Monk Seal world, but nevertheless today was a hectic little day at Rabbit Island. Until late in the day it was a boyz day out there, with RIP, R301,Buster, and a new U/M that I hadn't seen before, all clustered at the left end of he island, there was alot of snapping and barking as RIP exerted his dominance. There were also multiple swim/play sessions with various combinations of the cast except for the new guy.
I couldn't get much info on the new dude. There was a definite male belly, and I'd guess at medium size, with no visible tags, and no markers visible at this distance. The most noteable thing about him was that he had almost no neck, and a definite deep crease at the point where the back of the head meets the forward edge of the shoulder hump. At first I thought it was a possible scar, or entanglement thing, but I don't think that its the case. Further observations are required, but I don't think its anyone I've met before.
The highlight of the day came at 1157 when RIP and Buster hauled out at the 3rd Blue Sign (3BS), in the company of a very phat chick. It would prove to be M&M !! She had last been seen by the Billands at Campbell Industrial Park on 3-19-09.
RIP and Buster had a "ten rounder" going for a while there. RIP was very intense about keeping Buster away for his woman, and Buster being the deviously little dude that he is was finding ways to skirt the issue. Ultimately might won out and Buster gave up and returned to the left end to hang out with R301. RIP and M&M remained at 3BS.
Only M&M knows the plan, but my ballpark guess for a birth would be around the 1st or 2nd week of June at the earliest, so there is lots of time left. Will she hang at Rabbit Island , go back to Campbells, or venture back over to Molokai ??? That is the question.
Posse person Mary Jay called at 0747 to report 4DJ aka T21M at the Ewa Beach, beach park today.
The Billand reported Kermit , fronting the cottages on Nimitz Beach.
