3-29-2014 Late Entry - Ewa Girl & Team Billand

Aloha Good People!
We have Diane T. to thank for the sending the shots of the Grand Madame Ewa Girl!  We thank you Miss Diane!  (oh and she snuck in a shot of Team Billand out on the beach working hard).

At 0653 I began a day of Sadie Watch duty. I found her at the far left end of Rabbit Island, at yesterday’s location. There still was no pup. Also there , but well away from her was an U/F juvenile animal that remained all day, but I was never able to confirm an ID.

At 0847 Mojo (RI17) galumphed out of the water to join Sadie. He was her constant companion for the rest of the day, whether she liked it or not.

At 1040 Kainoa (RN04) & Aukai (RL12) hauled out together , 30 ft right of 1BS, just below the Morning Glory. They would remain the rest of the day.

At 0900 Dana called to advise that she had sent photos of an U/U at Nimitz Cottages. When I checked the photos at 0930 I found that it was R018. Thank you Susan for the shots.

Marilyn checked in at 0957 from the end of the world. She, Lesley & Ken had done the usual Ka’ena Point trek, apparently with MANY others. They initially found Ka’ena (RO40) . He would be joined at 1020 by RW02.

Vera Cober called at 0926 with the report of Ewa Girl (RS00) at Wind Sock. Unfortunately he camera decided to die today, so she was left with all the talent in the world , and no camera !

3-29-2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Trek

Marilyn, Ken and I did the Ka'ena Pt monitoring today.
It was a totally unusual day. It started off meeting a gigantic group at the parking lot on Mokuleia side. The first head count was ~ 50 men, later we were told that the group was close to 170 !

It was a men's church retreat/encounter. Most of the group did the hike to the point then later they all met at the Big Cove (Alau Gulch) where a big tent was set up for their meeting

Needless to say that for a couple of hours the point looked like an ant hill. Marilyn, Ken & I did tons of outreach to very respectful and interested groups.

Today was also the last Whale Count of the season - the whales must have received the message cause they put on a  hell of a show.

Little Albatrosses are growing fast, we can already see the color changes, the beaks getting longer and the wings spreading exercises.

As we arrived to the point we saw RO40 "Ka'ena" hauling out on the runway. Later RW02 "Kauai PV" swam up to him. It took a while for "Ka'ena" to notice him. When he woke up they nuzzled for a while then both entered the water. They moved to different locations to haul out and go to sleep. RW02 to a pool beside the Runway and RO40 went to his pool.

I checked Birth Beach and didn't find RN58 "Luana", but saw many trails and beds. Seems she (or another seal) has been around all week.

As Marilyn described, it was an eventful day from the moment we parked to the moment we left the parking lot with most of the retreat folks. We drove away on an on going car line till reaching the H2.

Our Costco Mocha Freeze was well deserved to day ;)  Aloha, Lesley

3-28-2014 DB's Dailies: Sadie,Kainoa,Mojo&Aukai@RI, M&M@WP, Ewa Girl&Haupu@WSK, Kermit@NIM, Kolohe@Maili Pt

At 0719 I found a very large Sadie (RB12) in the company of last year’s son Kainoa (RN04), and Mojo (RI17) all together just below the Morning Glory left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. Today was Sadie’s projected due date, however as of dark this evening there had been no action. I’ll be on it dark and early , of course. Mojo would enter the water at 1233 and I did not see him again. Kainoa hung around Sadie all day.

At 1120 on a pan, I found what would turn out to be Aukai (RL12) on the water front rocks at Rocky Right Beach. She would depart a 1616.

At 0810 Team Billand reported M&M (R020) playing with an orange buoy off shore of White Plains. She would haul out to the showers at 0824.

At 1036 the Billands found Ewa Girl (RS00) at Wind Sock. She would be joined by Haupu (RB24) at 1448.

At 1315 I got word from the Billands that Karen Banes had found Kermit (R012) fronting #1705, Nimitz Cottages. The Billands would also check him out later in the day.

At 1315 Team Billand found Kolohe (RW22) at Maili Point.

Evening email from Vera Cober provided the usual cute Meli (RF20) fix for today.
