2-24-2014 DB's Dailies: RK36@SC, Kaiwi@TBL, Aukai & Mojo @ RI, Kolohe @ GR, Haupu,M&M,RIP @ WP, Kermit @ WSK, R5AY&Meli@TB, RI37 @ Sunset Beach

At 0808 I found RK36 doing 6 minute dives at Spitting Cave.

A 0858 Jack (at the Bay) called to advise that a lone animal was at Toilet Bowl. When I arrived at 0930 I found Kaiwi (RK96).

When I got back to Makai Pier at 1110 I found what would prove to be Aukai (RL12) on the water front rocks of Rocky Right Beach, on Rabbit Island.

At 1126 an animal hauled out to Seal Rock Inlet, on RI. It would take until 1232, but it would prove to be my #2 son, Mojo (RI17), home for a visit from the rigors of Molokai life.

Team Billand called at 0830 with the report of Kolohe (RW22) at Guard Rails Beach, Maili. He’d last been seen on 2-5-14 on RI.

At 0930 the Billands reported Haupu (RB24) at Tower #1, White Plains.

They had been aware of two animals swimming off shore of Tower#1 for a while. At 0959 RIP (RR70), and M&M (R020) hauled out to Tower #1. RIP joined Haupu while M&M was off the side a bit according the the Billands.

The Billands advised that all three animals were in the water at 1745.

At 1047 they found Kermit (R012) at Wind Sock.

Dana called at 1124 to advise that Lesley had reported RI37 at Sunset Beach.

The following photos were taken on Feb 15th from Kathy O (from Omaha)... Kathy sent the photos to the science center since she was concerned about Pohaku's wound. The pictures were taken at Secret Beach and Pohaku is covered in seaweed. Great shots with her 1200ml lens. Thank you Kathy for sharing.

2/23/2014 DB's Dailies:

Jack (at the Bay) called at 0731 to advise that fellow HB Ranger, Lincoln had called him with the report of an animal on the ledge, and one in the water at Toilet Bowl, Hanauma Bay. When we arrived at 0752 we found Kaiwi (RK96) snoozin’ on the ledge in yesterday’s location, and RK36 patrolling in the waters of the inlet. He would haul out to rejoin Kaiwi at 0811. This marked the first time I’d seen an animal scale the steep climb up onto the flats. All others hauling out to that location via flushing up out of the Toilet Bowl. They were both snoozin’ away the day when we departed.

At 1052 I found an U/U , mostly hidden behind the water front rocks of Seal Rock Inlet on Rabbit Island. At 1120 it moved totally out of my line of sight. I checked from the Makapuu Overview at 1244 and saw that the animal was visible from that location, but an ID was totally out of the question.

Both Melanie & Marilyn were out on the hunt today, did not find any additional critters.

I had one bad guy on Rabbit Island today from 1130 until 1145.A passing one-man paddler stopped to no doubt tell the guy the island was off limits, because after the chat he immediately returned to his kayak and departed. DOCARE met him at Makai Pier when he returned at 1206.

Cianna called at 0820 to advise that volunteer Tony had called on his way to R5AY&Meli duty to report RI37 and Right Spot (R016) at Turtle Bay. Vera Cober later called with the same report.

Cianna checked in again at 1123 with a report of an animal at the Beach Rd., end of Diamond Head. Dana called at 1218 to advise that volunteer Charles Lee had a found a female there, and it was a probable Rocky. The photo was inconclusive, but size would indicate Rocky.

At 1126 the Billands checked in after having combed the quadrant. They had responded to a call about an animal at KoOlina, but no one was there when they arrived. That was it so far from that end of the galaxy.

2-22-2014 DB's Dailies:

At 0834 Jack (at the Bay) called to advise that he had asked the Whale Count guys to check Toilet Bowl when they went to their count site. They reported 2 critters. Jack and I were there by 0845, and confirmed the animals as RK36 & Kaiwi (RK96). Kaiwi had last been seen on a YouTube video doing a Valentine’s Day evening forage off shore of Magic Island. Her last SE quadrant sighting had been just the day before (2-13-14) at Toilet Bowl.

At 1034 I found Kainoa (RN04) fronting Left Greenery on Rabbit Island.

Despite lotsa’ trudgin’ by both Gayle and myself, that was the cast out this way for the day.

Speaking of trudgin’, it’s Saturday and that means that Marilyn & Lesley were at the end of the world today. At the point of Ka’ena Point they found Ka’ena (RO40) and Kerby (RW08) at Ka’ena’s Pool, with RW02 at the main pool. On their way home they found Luana (RN58) at the birth beach, Mokuleia.

Afternoon email from Karen Banes brought word of and animal at Ola’s , Turtle Bay. My dollar says RI37 but ??????

There was also an animal reported at White Plains. The Billands checked the quadrant after their Whale Count day was over and confirmed the animal as M&M at Tower #1, White Plains.

Kermit (R012) had also been reported. The Billands confirmed his location as Wind Sock.
