July 4, 2023 Tuesday's Dailies

Hope you all had a good and safe fourth of July!  Todays dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕  Marilyn did view Rabbit Island but had so many photos to sort through, we'll get a report tomorrow.

Team R&B started early morning at the bay. They found RM31 Kai resting and doing just fine until some people came by. He managed to ignore them and stayed despite their ignorance.

Then they spotted Nalu R3CX swimming and another seal he is chasing turned out to be Lei Ola RH48.

They looked Nalu over carefully and didn't see any lines, no hook visible. Hopefully he tossed it all. He was after Lei Ola.  There were two women on their surf board following the seals taking a video.

Seals hurried away, Lei Ola landed and of course Nalu followed her up on the rocks.. They were able to get a better look at his mouth, and they did not see any fishing gear. The two of them landed.

Still at the bay they saw Kala RH76 foraging off the rocks for the longest time, until she finally landed to the right. Then some people came around and got close to Kala. One girl walked right up to her when the DLNR show up and witnessed the girls on the rocks by the seals. He called out to the kis and walked the girl to her mom and dad.

Then a boy came alone, got a rock and started barking like a sea lion.

Kala was annoyed, Team R&B called out to the boy who dropped the rock.  Honestly what are these people thinking????

Team R&B had been out from 7:30 to after 1 pm, watching in fear that someone would do something stupid and they did. They were soooooo grateful to the DLNR for being out there today!

July 3, 2023 Monday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕  As a side note just want to say DB we miss you dearly, can't believe you left us six years already.

Team R&B been having car issues this week so today, Melina was kind enough to take Barb out. They first went to the bay and there were tourist in the area leaving, said there were no seals just dolphins.

That is when Barb suddenly saw a beautiful silvery seal hauling up on the rocks to hide from the boys. It was the beautiful Lei Ola RH48.

There were multiple seals fighting off the rocks. One of them was RH76 Kala who made her way up

the rocks to rest. 

Another seal went left and hauled in alone. They were able to ID RM31 Kai.  They honestly thought there were two more seals but they disappeared.

At another west side location which was there second and last stop. There on water front rocks was R416. He was well hidden, but they did see his scar on his left fore flipper.

July 2, 2023 Sunday's Dailies

Marilyn viewed Rabbit ISland from 1:10 to 3:00 and there were four seals once again.

On the 1BS side of LPB was RK37 Huia: adult size, yellowish gray female belly, two red tags and a nb on her lower left side. She though she saw a pit scar between her shoulders which Marilyn had not seen before. It also may be an indent from a rock on the beach.

On the rock flats behind SRI towards RRB were two seals:

Adult Female: adult size, mottled gray female belly and two red tags. The AF left about 2:00 and hauled out again closer to SRI about 2:44 pm

RQ44 Mahina: juvenile size, old coat with lots of green, female belly and three red tags. Marilyn is reasonably sure she was the J/F from the last two days. RQ44 is 13 months old, good having her around.

About 1:15 pm, Marilyn noticed one of the Weaners was hauling out to RRB: weaner size, shape and coloration, light female belly. She left about 2:38 pm. She is probably the U/U from that location yesterday.

Team R&B started their morning at the bay and found two seals.  One was RG32 and the other was R3CX Nalu. Nalu has a hook and line attached to his lower lip.

Big black hook, yellow thread like line coming from the hook. The line was wrapped over the rocks.

They called the hotline, authorities as well as Melina.

Nalu was resting for a while then he got upset with RG32 who was close to him. They had words, then R3CX tossed his head about, rolled around trying to get the line off.

He went into a shallow pond, put his face on the rocks to get the line off. There was so much of it, Team R&B could not determine how long, maybe 20 ft?

R3CX entered the water, tossing his head around, being very vocal along the way, and then he was

gone.  Volunteer and Melina were both there and saw all of this take place.  Pretty difficult to watch a seal in distress.

RG32 remained on site. Team R&B noted RG32 has a lot more scratches on his neck and face than the last time they saw him. Nothing of major concern, just some new markers.

July 1, 2023 Saturday's Dailies

Marilyn  viewed Rabbit Island from 1:35 to 3:05 and there were four seals on island today.

On the rock flats of LPV was one of the weaners: weaner size, shape and coloration, light female belly and two red tags. The weaner moved up to the rocks at the base of the cliff and got into what looked like an uncomfortable position for at least a half hour before moving down and showing her belly again. 

Out on RRB was RK37 Huia: adult size, older coat, tannish yellow female belly, two red tags and a nb on her lower left side. Marilyn though she saw the NB on her yesterday but wasn't sure.

Much later Marilyn realized there was another seal on RRB. It was actually there when she first started viewing but she didn't notice until it moved. She is labeling this an U/U Unknown Unknown. Probably weaner to juvenile size, but not much else to go on.

At 2:23 pm, Marilyn realized that a small seal had hauled out on the rock flats between SRI and RRB. She is labeling this seal a Juvenile Female: juvenile size, old coat with lots of green, dark green female belly and at least two red tags. This might be RQ44 Mahina, but she's not positive. She later moved down behind waterfront rocks where she was barely visible.
