6/2/2016 DB's Dailies: Sadie&Pup,Kekoa,Kea&RM38@Rabbit Island, Kolohe@Lanai Lookout, Right Spot@Sandy Beach, Pohaku@Paradise Cove, RIP&RL42@Makua Cliffs, Nihoa@Hidden Beach

At 0706 I found Sadie&Pup snoozin’, 40 ft left of 1BS on Rabbit Island(D#36). There were 2 observed swims and 3 observed feeds. The change has begun with the pup’s coat. The belly has lightened, but I still can’t confirm a sex.

 The highlight of the day also came at 0706 when I found a partially visible animal in the high grass, 80 ft right of 3BS on RI. When the animal finally moved down I confirmed the Kea (RN46) ID, but that beautiful NB on his RFF. It has been 39 days since I last saw him. Welcome home kid !

 At 1046 what would prove to be Kekoa (RK72) hauled out to join Kea. ID was by his right face scar.
At 1238 RM38 came roaring out of the water heading for Kekoa & Kea. He and Kekoa went at it for a while, with RM38 definitely the more dominant, but Kekoa wasn’t takin’ any guff. The did a few more rounds, before both would enter the water . Both would haul out again separately to join Kea again.

 On routine check of Lanai Lookout Flats I found Kolohe RW22) and a whole buncha’ dummies. I managed to get everyone to give him some space, but I’m sure that would a temporary pause in the action.

Ocean Safety called at 1511 with the report of an animal just hauled out to the east end of Sandy Beach. When I arrived at 1520 I found Right Spot (R016) and cordoned her off. The HMMA Hotline was notified. Picked up the rope at 1945. Right Spot remains.

 At 0558 Team Billand called with the report of Pohaku (RO28) once again at Paradise Cove.

 At 1340 they found RIP (RR70) & RL42 at Makua Cliffs. RIP would depart at 1406. RL42 remained. Tammy & Dave T., the End of the World trek today. The first text was a “skunked “ message. Thankfully, on their way out the found Niho (R912) at Hidden Beach. Thanks guys !!

HMMA Update from 6/1

It was another quiet day. Only one call to the hotline at 0630 about a seal at Paradise Cove. The West Sector Manager Chrissy responded and ID'ed Pohaku resting on the rocks. There were many people on the beach along with some very inquisitive kids. A big mahalo to HMMA volunteers Melina and Terrie for answering all the children's questions.

(I'm going to take a leap and say it was Team Billand who called in the seal since they were on site at 6:11 am....  They participated in a blessing of Pohaku on the 1st.)

It would be my 2nd look at Rabbit Island before I found Sadie & Pup (D#35) on the beach, fronting Left Greenery doing a feed. This marks the first observed time that they have been away from the “birth beach”, at the left end of the island. They would enter the water ate 0914 and haul out again at their more usual spot left of 1BS at 1000. They were the only RI residents today.

 At 0611 Team Billand reported Pohaku (RO28) out on the rocks at Paradise Cove. Auntie Nettie did a blessing, and Pohaku departed at 1700. Hopefully Barbara will comment on the blessing.

 At 1123 they found RIP (RR70) and another animal at Makua Cliffs. At 1215 the other animal would prove to be R8HY. Both would depart at 1215.

HMMA 5/31 Update

Nasty weather kept a lot of folks off the beaches today. Perhaps the seals as well as not too much activity. A call to the hotline at about 1600 came in about a seal near Diamond Head. South Sector responder Colleen went out and ID’ed Buster with a new abrasion to his right shoulder.

Though not as bad as yesterday it was nevertheless difficult to get an ID on Rabbit Island today. Fortunately Sadie&Pup (D#34) were no brainers, as was little RG32 when he galumphed out of the high grasses behind Seal Rock Inlet on RI. The job got more difficult with an U/F that I found at 0647, up in the Morning Glory, right of 3BS. Equally difficult was getting an ID on the male who hauled out to join her at 1024. Though I tried all day, I was never able to confirm an ID on either, though I have some thoughts.

 Kimo S., called from Sandy Beach at 0745 to advise that an animal had swum by him in the shore break line up. He managed to get some shots but they are inconclusive. It is possible that the animal may have been Kekoa, based on one of the shots showing a right side facial scar, but ???? I tried to connect that find with the U/M at RI, but I could not see anything that would confirm that ID.

 At 1400 I found Kolohe (RW22) snoozin’ on the Lanai Lookout Flats.

 Team Billand checked in at 0916 to advise that they were with RL42 at Makua Cliffs.

 At 1445 they advised that RIP (RR70) had hauled out to join her.
