4-3-2014 DB's Dailies:

On my 0645 Rabbit Island check it was RM38 & Sadie (RB12) at the far left end of the beach. When I got back to Makai Pier at 0830 it was RM38...Sadie & a small black "player to be named later", on RI. Yes.... though on paper she was due on 3-28, Sadie knew that today was the day !! Mom and pup were there all day. M38 was gone at 1051.

On a pan at 0913 I found Sadie’s pup from last year, Kainoa (RN04) snoozin’ amongst the Kainoa sized rocks fronting 1BS. He was oblivious to what Mom was doin’. He remained all day.

At 1332 what proved to be RIP (RR70) hauled out left on 1BS on RI. He saw Sadie and pup and stayed 100 ft away. He had last been seen (by me) on RI, 3-17-14. Nothing since.

At 0730 John called from White Plains to report an animal on the beach and a swimming head patrolling the beach front. Vera Cober called at 0912 to confirm M&M (R020) on the beach, as well as another animal that they were having difficulty getting an ID on . Diane T would call at 0958 with confirmation of an RV08 tag, making it Buster (RV08). He had last been report on 3-17-14, on the Reef Runway.

Kimo Smith called at 0713, on his way to a Hauula job, to report R5AY once again across from the Fire Station in Hauula.

At 0840 Team Billand called from Vegas advising of a call from the Hotline about "N12" being seen on the Reef Runway site. N12 would be Aukai and though possible, it didn’t seem likely. I called Heide Weber on the Hotline and learned that the reporting security guard (not Eileen) thought he saw a bleach on "N12...112 or maybe N2" on a large animal, who was in the company of an U/U small animal. Given the size description as a large animal it pretty much has to be Ewa Girl (RS00), but an U/U will probably be required by the office.

4-2-2014 DB's Dailies:

At 0634 on my first look at Rabbit Island I found Sadie (RB12)just moving down and behind the water front rocks at the far left end of RI. She would be nearly invisible all day, until I got back to the pier for my afternoon session at 1451. Still no pup.

Also at 0634 I found RM38 near the Morning Glory to the left of 1BS. He would move down to the water line to join Sadie for the day. When I got back at 1451 he was gone.

At 1141 posse member June stopped by the pier to increase my girth, and called excitedly to report an animal swimming under the pier near the shore line. I ran out immediately, and did manage to see a few seconds of swimming head. That was to the end of that. Looking at June’s photos , in camera, she lucked out and got a shot of Mojo (RI17) and his signature natural bleach on the top left side of his head. Thank You June !!!

Barbara called from Vegas at 0633 to advise that one of their posse had reported an animal at the showers , White Plains. Vera Cober would confirm the M&M (R020) ID at 0910.

Cianna called at 0800 with the report of an U/U on the North Shore. Awaiting further word.

Cianna called again at 1030 with the report of an U/U near the fire station in Hauula. Posse member Kimo Smith just happened to be driving by while on the job, and confirmed the R5AY ID at 1033.

Dana called at 1110 with the report of the arrival of Haupu (RB24) to WP at 1045.

The Donna called at 1339 having received photos from one of her kayaker posse, reporting an U/U at Moku Nui. Photo evidence confirmed the KC (RK28) ID. I forwarded the shots to Tracy, and got a return email providing word that KC had been documented back in August, by Navy survey personnel, on Niihau, with her pup !!! ID was by her bleach. Previous to that sighting she had been seen at Kualoa on 7-6-13, and afterward on N. Larsen’s , Kauai, on 10-15-13. By 1-6-14 she was seen back on Oahu at Moku Nui, and has been back on Oahu since.
Okay I have to say it... it's been weighing on me for several weeks now and I am sure many of you are worried about Irma.... After reading about KC and her travels it gives me hope... that Miss Irma is out there. We may never know but I look forward to the day when the Dailies state: Sheeeeeee's Baaaaack!  Miss Irma get your tooshie home.

Sadie aren't you ready yet?

4-2-2014 Lesley's Ka'ena Point Monitoring

As soon as the all clear was given I headed out to Ka'ena Point and it was a seal of a day ;)

Beautiful weather and only a handful of visitors adventured out today. The tide was very low showing reefs not frequently seen made me wonder all the way who and where would I see seals today. The ocean was choppy and there was no noticeable surge from the Chile earthquake.

RO40 "Ka'ena" and RW30, the pretty and very plump Molokai girl ( it's the first time I see her on a flat surface) were hauled out at the very end of the Runway. When I checked back on them on my way out RO40 "Ka'ena" was starting to get wet by the rising tide.

RW02 "Kauai PV" and RW22 "Kolohe" were just entering the Main Pool. There was a little interaction while both hauled out on the center reef and went to sleep.

What a treat to see RW22 "Kolohe", he is SO big !!  When he was born I spent many, many hours monitoring him and  RK28 "KC" at the Mokuleia pup site.
While watching them it was interesting to see them both side-by-side showing their NB

On my way out a last look around and there was RL42 (F) at the entrance of Ka'ena's Pool. She swam around checking all corners and chose to haul out (due to low tide pool was very shallow) on the flat reef across the pool. The location was her favorite spot when she was a weaner.

I rechecked all beaches on the way out to Birth Beach /Mokuleia side. There was no sign of RN58 "Luana"  Aloha,  Lesley

4-1-2014 DB's Dailies: Sadie,RM38&Kainoa@RI, R018, M&M @ WP, U/M Makaha

As has been the case for the last few days, it was nice to see Sadie (RB12) on the left end beach, at 0700. Alas, there was still no pup, and by end of day that remained the case. Only Sadie knows !

On a pan at 1024 I found that one of the rocks fronting 1BS on RI, was in fact Kainoa (RN04). He would remain at that location the rest of the day.

At 1101 RM38 would haul out the left end of RI. He would ultimately find Sadie who by that time was cooling off at the water line. There was just minimal interaction owing mostly to Sadie’s adamant stance of not no but Hell No , to his advances. He backed off immediately. Though he remained 20 ft away the rest of the day there was no further interaction.

At 0745 one of the early morning regulars at White Plains called with the report of an animal having just hauled out fronting the first couple of cabins at WP. He put up signs. Vera Cober would confirm the R018 ID at 0907. Diane T called at 1545 to advise that R018 had departed.

Ocean Safety called at 1322 with the report of an U/U at Makaha. Debbie responded. The photo provided was inconclusive except to establish that it was a male.

At 1350 Diane Tekai reported M&M (R020) near the showers at WP.
