1/4/2010 DB Dailies

On my first look at Rabbit Island at 0715 I found that Duke was at the right end of the beach, snoozin' away after his 6 day pigout at Spitting Cave. He remained there all day, and was the one and only visible resident of RI.

On my 4th pass through Sandy Beach at 0729 I found Right Spot at her usual spot at the east end of the beach. When I came back for my 1300 check she was still there but movement of the cordon was required. As I was doing that she up and entered the water of her own volition, at 1330. After rolling in the shallows for a bit she began moving along the coast line toward the Half Point channel. I picked up the stuff and remained at SB in case she hauled out at another location. I lost sight of her at 1349. At 1415 I relocated to the Blow Hole lookout, and to my shock and awe there was Right Spot doing 6 minutes dives.

Team Billand checked in at 1020 to report Kermit and Benny near the east end fence at White Plains. They called again at 1139 to report Ewa Girl at Palm Grove, Campbell Industrial Park. Barbara checked in at 1659 to advise that Kermit had departed WP.

1/3/2010 DB Dailies

Howling SW winds made it a less than ideal beach day, but it was a bumper crop of critters.

The Rabbit Island cast was Mikala at 1BS, and RIP at 2BS. There is a good chance that RIP overnighted.

Unfortunately, there were a couple of Bad Guys at RI today, a male and female in a Lavender kayak (they should be busted just for owning a Lavender kayak), but on the bright side there was a DOCARE response and they were dealt with upon their return to Oahu. They did not bother the critters at all.

We found Duke at Spitting Cave for his 6th consecutive day. He was doing 7 minute dives, but we only saw 2 ups. He may have departed SC, since we last saw him on the left side of the big rock, heading toward the point . I was hoping to see him haul out to RI in the late afternoon, but no such luck. Maybe tomorrow.....only Duke knows !

Team Billands first call came at 0659 reporting Benny at White Plains. He may well have overnighted. Their next call came at 0856 reporting Kermit at Nimitz Beach, fronting pavilion #1813. Their real find of the day was reported at 1110, when the found Ewa Girl at Palm Grove, Campbell Industrial Park She had last been seen (by the Billands) at CIP on 12-17-09.

Posse member Keith Kenyon did the KP trek again today, and sent proof of the boys, Kerby and Ka'ena, and the young female RI37, at the end of the world.

This was the 2nd consecutive day with no Right Spot, either at SB or RI. Dare I hope that "normalcy" may be returning ????....... Only Right Spot knows !

The Rabbit Island crew for today would turn out to be Buster at 3BS, Mikala at 1BS, RIP at 2BS, and Sadie at the far right end of the beach.

We found Duke once again doing 6 minute dives at Spitting Cave. This is his 5th consecutive day foraging there.

Team Billand called at 0720 to report Kermit near the east end fence at White Plains. They called again at 0802 to report that Benny had hauled out to join Kermit within the cordon.

Marilyn, the mother of my cats, did the Ka'ena Point trek today, and found Ka'ena, Kerby, and a very chunky BG.

I forgot to mention in last night's dailies that with the beginning of the New Year, as highly paid semi professionals you should no that there are no more Weaners, as of 1-1-10. As of the beginning of the new calendar year, all weaners become Juveniles.

1/1/2010 DB Daily Rabbit Island & Sandies

I was on the road at 0600, and immediately saw that I'd totally forgotten that it is apparently some kind of law that says everybody on the island of Oahu must drive to a spot along the coast line and wait for sunrise on New Year's Day. The SE quadrant lookouts and every inch of beach with a sunrise view was PACKED ! After the sun came up everybody magically disappeared, never to see the beach again, until this time next year.

I noticed on my first look at Rabbit Island that RightSpot wasn't visible, so it was going to be another of those days, waiting for Right Spot to arrive........somewhere.

When we got to Spitting Cave at 0803 we found Duke doing 7 minute dives. This was his 4th consecutive day at Spitting Cave.

As we were passing the Blow Hole Lookout at 0850 we spied that alllllll to familiar lump at the east end of Sandy Beach. When we got to the sand, there was Right Spot in her usual spot. We cordoned her off and she has remained there all day. I'll be returning shortly.

When we got to Makai Pier at 0914 we found Buster at 3BS, Sadie at the right end of the beach, and Mikala on the water front rocks at the far right , rubble cove. All would remain there all day.

While doing the RI observations, SC posse person Susan, called at 0947 to say that she was watching 2 animals at Spitting Cave. When we got back there at 1003 we found that RIP had joined Duke. There was mostly play activity going on, with some foraging dives.

Team Billand called at 0955 to say that Kermit had hauled out fronting pavilion #1813 at Nimitz Beach at 0900.

Right Spot was gone from Sandy Beach when I arrived at 1816. A witness said she had departed at around 1800.

Happy 2010

Happy New Year to all MonkSealMania bloggers!! Wishing all of you a healthy and happy 2010. To all the volunteers out there a big huge Mahalo for all your dedication and support.

And on one last note January 1st will forever be special to me for this is the day I met Chester in 2008... And although the old bugger is no longer with us, he will always be my first monk seal love and the reason I created this blog... My life will never be the same because of all he brought to me... most of which is many of you. Bless you all... ~donna~

DB Post Thursday 12.31.2009

On my first look at Rabbit Island at 0712 I found Right Spot near 2BS. It was a great relief to see that she has remained at RI. Sandy Beach and fireworks would not have been a good combination for her on New Year's Eve. Thank you Righty !!!

When Marilyn and I did our Spitting Cave check at 0746 we found Duke doing 6 minute dives. This is his 3rd consecutive day at Spitting Cave. He had the place all to himself.

When I got back to Makai Pier at 0948 I found that Kolohe had joined the cast at the right end of the beach. He and Righty Spot had the place all to themselves today.

Team Billand reported Kermit near the east end fence at White Plains, at 0812. Not a good New Year's Eve location, but hopefully the Navy cops can keep the animals (the leggers) in check.

Team called again at 1404 to report Benny in the kiddie pond at Kermit's Reef on the west side of the Nimitz jetty.

To each and every one of the Posse, Near & Far........HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!
