DB Post Tuesday September 16th

M&M,Buster,Hoku&R301@RI, 9-16-08
M&M is proceeding along at Warp Speed on her molt. Today, D#5, she is 98%, with just 3 little wisps along her left side, remaining. If she gave a good sneeze, it would all be over. Buster on the other had is proceeding at a more usual rate. His D#4 molt is a a mere 30%. The two molters were together at the right end of the beach, with no interaction.

Down at the left end near 1BS, Hoku and R301 spent the day, close together, but again with no interaction.

I spoke with Charles this morning , and his magic computer says that Kolohe continues to cruise the Kaneohe/Moku Manu area. A map is forthcoming but no recieved as of this writing. I took a few seconds to add up the days, and found that I last saw Kolohe 28 days ago, at RI. For Kerby it has been 20 days since I last saw him. Of course we have the luxury of a transmitter for Kolohe, but Kerby continues to be a mystery. Aloha, DB

DB Post Monday September 15th

M&M,Buster,Hoku&R301@RI, 9-15-08
The only action in DB's World today, was watching M&M and Buster rot, on Rabbit Island. M&M is really molting quickly. On this D#4 she is 80%. Buster is proceeding a bit more normally. His D#3 molt is 25%.

Hoku hauled out to the left end and spent the day there. He was visited first by Buster, and they did a short swim/play session, and then Hoku hauled out to his original location. Later, R301 would stop by. They spent the rest of the day together, but there was no interaction. Aloha, DB

DB Post From Sunday September 14th

Hoku,M&M,Buster,R301&U/M@RI, Ewa Girl@HB, 9-14-08
Heavy VOG made even seeing Rabbit Island a challenge, let alone , identify the cast. Rain at mid afternoon brought the day to a halt. The cast was Hoku, at the far left end, M&M, and Buster, who are rotting nicely. M&M is already 65% and it's only D#3. Buster is doing the more traditional method, D#2 , 20%. R301 hauled out to the 1BS at mid afternoon, and an Unknown, male, with red tag on the left hind flipper hauled out just briefly, near Hoku. I could not get a ID due to the horrible conditions, but I MAY (heavy on the MAY) have seen a marker that would indicate Benny. I cannot state that as fact , however.

I found Ewa Girl , still at HB this morning. HB posse member Martha called to say that she had departed at approximate 1245. Aloha, DB

DB Post Saturday September 13th

M&M,Buster,Sadie,RB08&Hoku@RI, EG@HB, 9-13-08
When I got to Hanauma Bay at 0620 I found Ewa Girl waiting for me. She had obviously overnighted at her usual spot.

The Rabbit Island cast began with M&M who is looking like a train wreck, 30 % molted on D#2. To my surprise Buster began his molt today. D#1 was 10%. I knew by his behavior that he was due, and when I checked his history , I see that he molted at exactly this time last year. Despite his molting, he managed to play with or haul out to every other RI cast member today. Hoku was at 1BS and remained there all day, and RB08 was at the extreme left end of the beach.

The highlight of the day was finding Sadie ! I haven't seen her since 8-23-08. Slowly but surely the gang is showing up again. Now if I can just get Kolohe and Kerby to stop by , I'd feel a whole lot better. Aloha, DB

DB Post Friday September 12th

M&M,Buster,R301&Hoku@RI, Ewa Girl@HB, Rocky@Kalaeloa, 9-12-08
The Rabbit Island crew was M&M and Buster at 3BS, and R301 at the far left end. Hoku hauled out to 1BS around 1100, and Buster moved down to join him at 1135. They entered the water and were still swimming and playing at 1200. When I got back for a late in the day check at 1758, R301 and Hoku were at the left end, but far apart, and Buster and M&M were still at 3BS.

M&M began her molt today (D#1 , 2%).

HB posse member Ann called at 1200 to report an animal on the left side flats. I couldn't get there until 1810 , but at that time I found Ewa Girl resting comfortably.

Team Billand called at 1120 to report that they had found Rocky, near the Wind Sock on Kalaeloa Beach, in the SW quadrant. They called again at 1454, to report that she had departed when they did their afternoon check. Aloha, DB

DB Post Thursday September 11th

M&M,Buster,RB08&Hoku@ RI, 9-11-08
The Rabbit Island cast began as Buster and M&M at 3BS, and later I became aware of RB08 tucked into the the old tree trunk at the left end of the island. Hoku hauled out mid morning to the left end of the island. There was no observed interaction between anyone. Everyone was still there on my 1200 check. When I did the 1810 RI check on my way home, I found only Buster and M&M still there. Aloha, DB

DB Post Wednesday September 10th

M&M,Buster & Hoku@RI, 9-10-08
The began as yet another of those M&M and Buster , RI days, but things got a WHOOOOLE lot better at 0948, when on a routine pan I foun Hoku's bulbous butt just ascending the beach front incline, at 1BS. Even though Charles' computer told me he was up in the Kailua/Mokuluas area, it was not as comforting as seeing that chubby little guy back home on Rabbit Island. I now know that he can find his way back home from Kailua. (a thing that I have only a 50-50 chance of doing). Now if his 2 fellow Weaners would just show, I'd be stoked ! Aloha, DB

DB Post Tuesday September 9th

M&M,Buster&RB08@RI, 9-9-08
Finding our little girl, RB08 at the left end of the island broke this morning was a nice addition to the two regulars down at the 3BS, M&M and Buster. Actually, M&M was alone until around 1000 when Buster showed up. All of the cast remained in the locations thru my departure at 1500. Aloha, DB

DB Post Monday September 8th

M&M & Buster @ RI, 9-8-08
Now I know exactly how Bill Murray felt in "Groundhog Day" ! Once again...and again...and again...M&M and Buster doing nothing at 3BS on RI.

DB Post Sunday September 7th

Buster&M&M@RI, T15M@KP, Rocky@DH, 9-7-08
It was yet another Buster & M&M day at RI. Nobody did nuthin' ! No doubt everybody is concerned about the shark sighting and associated news stories on the Kailua to Bellows side. I can assure you that there is nobody more concerned than I am, but after emails with Charles Littnan, and telephone conversations through the day with Thea and David Schofield, there is still no evidence of any of our animals being involved. Of course, there are animals not seen lately, but that is always going to be the case. Charles confirmed that the two transmitters on Kolohe and Hoku are still working so that is a good sign. Kerby is out there somewhere, as are the girlz, RB08 and Sadie, as well as many of the regulars, but so far there is no evidence of any problems. I remain positive.

Both Team Billand and later Joanna Tabor reported T15M at Ka'ena Point today.

D. Schofield called at 1550 to report an animal at DH. When I arrived at 1629 I found Rocky directly below the 2nd (middle) lookout. Aloha, DB

DB Post Saturday September 6th

M&M&Buster@RI, Ka'ena@KP
Rabbit Island was, once again , a real snoozer ! M&M and Buster were the only residents, and they just laid there all day, with no interaction even though they were only 10 ft apart.

A wonderful moment occurred at 1404 when my phone told me that Mary Frances was calling. I presumed she was checking in from the mainland since I knew that she'd left on Aug.29th. Nope........wrong..............again ! "Hi.... just thought I'd tell you that I saw Ka'ena at Ka'ena Point today". She is apparently here until the 17th. I'd just gotten over a week of mourning for Mary Frances leaving...... now I gotta' do it alllll over again ! It sure was good to hear that distinctive voice again.

Charles Littnan's magic computer has provided some proof for all the posse members who what to know where are favorite weaners have gone to. As of yesterday's map, Kolohe is still running around the Mokapu Peninsula area, and Hoku has been checking Kailua and the Mokes. Donna's kayak contacts were absolutely correct about seeing a critter. Aloha, DB

Sighting Unidentified Monks

Aloha Good People!

On Friday I was speaking to some of the Kayak folks in Kailua, and they told me this past week there have been 2 sightings at the Mokes. One time the tour group was held back so the animal would not be disturbed.... I was able to get any additional information about looks or a transmitter...

One day there was a seal surfing the ways... pretty close to some people surfers.... so... who knows might be those young'ens frolicking in the waves!

DB Post Friday September 5th

The Rabbit Island cast was R301, Buster, and M&M . Each was well away from the other, and there was no interaction (or action) at all today. Posse member Betty called from HB to report an animal on the left side rock flats at 0955. When I got down there at 1024 I found Rocky. Aloha, DB

M&M,Buster & Hoku@ RI, 9-4-08
It was another uneventful day at Rabbit Island . M&M was waiting for me when I got there at 0658. She would be joined by Buster at 1332. There was no interaction. Hoku arrived at 1030 at the far left end of the island. Nobody did nuthin'. Aloha, DB

DB Post Wednesday September 3rd

Buster,M&M&RB08@RI, 9-3-08
It had to happen sooner or later. Today was my first No Weaner Day, at RI. Obviously, the boyz are growing up and moving out. Today's cast was Buster staying close to M&M down at the 3BS, and little RB08 by herself up at the left end of the island. There was absolutely no action.

I'm happy to report that after months of waiting, the Blowhole Lookout is FINALLY open ! I did 2 checks from there today, as well as Lanai Lookoout, but found nobody. Aloha, DB

DB Post September 1st - UpDate

Todd White found the two Turtle Bay animals around 1900 this evening. No photos tonight, but the IDs were Lona (R017) and R5AY, both adult females.

I got other good news today from Sir Charles of Littnan (of Monk Seals& More fame. As of today, his magic computer says that Kolohe (RW22) remains in the Moku Manu area. Aloha, DB

DB Post Monday September 1st

Buster,M&M&Hoku@RI, U/U at Turtle Bay & Pipeline, 9-1-08
Buster, Hoku and M&M were the RI cast for today. I last saw Buster at Spitting Cave on 8-24-08. Finding M&M (the Mystery Molter) was the highlight of the day. I'd last seen her on 7-31-08 at RI, having just returned to Oahu after weaning her La'au Pt. , Molokai, female pup around 7-24-08. According to my math she will probably begin her post wean molt this week or next.

Thea called at 1040, to report 2 seals near the stables at Turtle Bay Hotel. I was under the impression that Todd was responding but according to end of day email, apparently the Waimea traffic turned him around and he never made it. Bummer !!!!! That would have been nice to know.

Email from posse member Lesley , late today advised that her visitors reported having seen a cordoned animal at Pipeline today. I have no further info on who it might have been . It was not reported to the hotline, as far as I know at this writing. Bummer....again ! Aloha, DB

DB Post Sunday August 31st

Hoku&R301@RI, T15M&Benny@KP, 8-31-08
It was another one of "them" days, in the SE quadrant. Hoku was at RI when I arrived the 2nd time, at 0842, and nothing else happened until R301 hauled out at 1342, well away form Hoku. There was zeror action or interaction.

Team Billand called at 0940 to report T15M at Ka'ena Point, and again at 0953 to report that Benny had arrived. Aloha, DB
