I received an email from a friend of the blog Deborah B. She was out at Ka'ena Point today and spotted only one monk seal. She didn't see any distinguishable marks to help ID the critter. There were lots of people some closer than they should be. At one point she told a boy to stop throwing rocks in the water by the seals.
Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:54 to 2:35 pm and there were seven seals seen during that time.
Mostly alone in the middle back of LPB was an Unknown Sub-adult: sub-adult to adult size, old coat with lots of green, dark rings around the eyes, two red tags, unsure of its sex, but Marilyn thinks it might be a male.
Nearer the waterline was TempN25: sub-adult size, about 35% molted, male belly, no tags. Marilyn couldn't really see his N25 applied bleaches, but she's reasonably sure its him. At one point he moved up the beach near the US, but later moved down to his original location.
Near TempN25 was one of the recent weaners that Marilyn labeled as RU48: chubby weaner size and shape, tan male belly and two red tags. This also could be RU64 since there's no real way to tell them apart.
Closer to the 1BS side of LPB was a Sub-adult Female: sub-adult size, older coat with a fair amount of green, female belly and unsure about tags.
Down from 1BS were two seals:
Recent weaner RU64 (or RU48): chubby weaner size and shape, light male belly and two red tags.
Down from 3BS was a Juvenile Male: juvenile size, newer coat, light male belly and two red tags.
Team R&B had a mixed bag kind of a day. It started at pokai where they saw two seals foraging. They tried to get IDs but didn't have much to go on. One seal was an adult with a newly molted coat and unknown if it had any tags.
The other seal was an adult with a coat that had lots of green.
While watching the seals they spotted a boobie hanging out. Looked like it was waiting for a fish just in case one got dropped. Then of course their were the dolphins out there going nuts.
Next they spotted a seal foraging by tracks. They couldn't make an ID, nor did they see anything that would give them any information.
They did see that R604 was still out on the beach resting onshore. She had moved up to the greens, but a guy came by and got too close so she moved down again.
Lastly at Waikomos they saw two seals on the beach. They also noted there were lots of truck tracks in the sand which is always unnerving. Thankfully both seals were fine. They ID'd RM31 Kai by getting a look at his tag. The other seal was Leina RL70 showing her white nails. She is 100% molted and looking 100% beautiful in her new coat.
