4-30-2012 DB's Dailes: Kaiwi @ Sandy Beach & Spitting Cave, Makaiwi @ Hau Bush, Ewa Beach

The day began at 0428 with a call from posse member Kimo, reporting Kaiwi (RK96) near her Naupaka bush at Kaiwi Kove. He said he found her upon his arrival at 0400.

I arrived , at 0555 and confirmed the Kaiwi ID. I noted that she had a small fish hook stuck in her ventral side, upper chest, just left of the midline. I also noted a swollen left eye, with at least one laceration below it, and blood stain on her snout.

I called the Monk Seal Hotline at 0623 and Dera got the ball rolling. Tracy, Sean and Mark arrived at 0905. The capture was begun at 0914 and ended at 0919. Kaiwi immediately departed. During the capture it was noted that she has another fish hook with line, stuck in the back of her tongue. They were not able to get to it, and another capture will be required. They assessed the eye, and were concerned but nothing could be done about it.

It may or may not be related , but posse member Teri called last night around 1800 to advise that Kaiwi, who was at Spitting Cave, was now foraging directly below a group of fishermen at the point. She observed them throwing items at her from their position, 50 ft above her. She disappeared around the point afterward.

At 1300 posse member Gayle call to advise that Kaiwi and an U/U larger animal were at Spitting Cave. Zeeny photos confirm the animal as Kolohe (RW22).

Team Billand reported Makaiwi (R4DF) at Hau Bush, Ewa Beach at 1032.

At 1353 the Billands found Kermit (R012) at Secret Beach, KoOlina.

At 1516 Kelly Girl Evans found Ua Malie (RT10) at High Rock, Kahuku.

Team Billand once again found Benny (RE74), Noa (R6FI), and Kerby (RW@ Maili Point.

The Elves and I looked high and low on the Kaiwi/Irma Quest in the SE quadrant, but found nothing, though good news would come a bit later.

At 0649 I found what I'm reasonably sure was RIP (RR70) at Rabbit Island. I clearly saw his dorsal transmitter scar, and a single right red tag. Conditions were poor today, so there is a possibility of an "oops" tomorrow, but I'm pretty danged sure it was RIP.

At 1202 I found Nani (RK60) newly arrived to 40 ft left of 1BS. Both would remain all day.

Team Billand reported RO28 at Paradise Cove at 0735. I heard Jan&Gerry's name as well as Diga, in conjunction with Pohaku duty. If there are other unsung heroes, Thank You !

At 0845 the Billands found Kermit (R012) foraging off shore of Kermit's Reef. At 1002 he hauled out to spend the day.

Dera called at 0933 with the report of an animal at Shark's Cove. At 1411 Kelly Girl reported that it was Right Spot (R016). Thanks to Hanna & Kelly Girl for duty. Again , if there were others, thanks again !

At 0940 the Billands advised that Clay Gates had called them reporting Irma (R010) at Iroquois Point. Thanks to Clay, and Vera Cober for Irma duty. This marks the first time since 3-13-12 that Irma has been west of Diamond Head.

At 1211 Team Billand reported 2AW at Army Rest Camp, in Waianae.

At 1313 the Billands found Noa (R6FI), Kerby (RW08) & Benny (RE74) together at Maili Point.

At 1644 Gayle called to advise that Kaiwi (RK96) was at Spitting Cave. When I arrived I found her doing 8 minute dives.
