1-31-11 DB Dailies

On my 2nd look at Rabbit Island, from the Makapuu Overview, at 0942 I could see Duke, with his big ol' beautiful N18 bleach shining brightly, on the water front rocks, 40 ft left of Seal Rock Inlet. The ID was instantaneous. M38 on the other proved to be a major pain in the okolele. He hauled out to the far left end of the beach at 1123. He assumed a position with his belly facing me, and then did not change position until finally at 1507 he rolled over an allowed me to see his posterior dorsal abscess, and then his left side natural bleach. I was "whisperering" ESP vibes to him all day, trying to get him to move, hoping that it would prove to be Buster, but alas, it turned out to be M38. Buster, wherever he was, was probably having these uncontrollable urges to constantly roll over all day ."Whispering" is not an exact science.

Surfer posse member Dave Martin called at 0703 reporting an animal just east of the shower , at Diamond Head. Of course, I immediately called Colleen. As usual she came through like the awesome posse person that she is, with the Irma ID.

Team Billand (speaking of awesome posse people) called at 1010 with the report of Kermit at Wind Sock.

They called again to report M&M at Palm Grove, Campbell Industrial Park. She is an untagged animal, but her Perm. ID is R-zero-2-zero (R020). Her N23 left side bleach was clearly visible. She was last seen, at Ka'ena Pt on 12-30-10, and hasn't been seen at CIP since 8-17-09 (by the Billands of course). She is definitely a "Phat Chick", It will be interesting to see what developes this year. She seems to have taken 2010 off, but did give birth on 6-25-09 at Rabbit Island. Her daughter, Mikala was found, murdered by gill net, at Bellows on 4-13-10.

1-30-11 DB Dailies

At 0739 I found Sam just hauling out to Right Greenery, on Rabbit Island. He would reenter the water at 1153, and hauled out again to the far left end of the beach, where he remained the rest of the day.

At 1039 on a pan, I became aware of a partially visible animal at Seal Rock Inlet. I could never see enough to make an ID. All I could report was an adult sized male, with at least one red tag, and a new coat. There are 4 regulars it could be, but at end of day it was U/M.

At 1117 on a pan, I became aware of a partially visible animal behind the water front rocks at Rocky Right Beach, at the right end of the island. I never got a look at the whole animal, but I did see two red tags on a hind flipper flex, and at 1151 on a roll over I lucked out and saw Kolohe's right side natural bleach.
(Where's team Billand?  - unusual for no mention of their day, I hope I don't have to worry).
Marilyn did the Ka'ena Point trek today, and found Kerby at the end of the world. Her day was called early, on account of rain.

RI37 @ Sharks Cove from Friday 1-28

Here are some great shots of RI37 at Sharks Cove on Friday..... seems she spent Saturday there too... but thanks to Liz Weske who spent a lot of time... (with out a book and only her camera) she sent in her pics.  While I was viewing them, seems like RI37 is looking quite round..... maybe she will have a successful pregnancy this year. ~donna~

At 0750 we found lots of Whale Watchers (it was the 1st whale count day) and Kolohe doing 7 minute dives at Spitting Cave.

My first look at Rabbit Island had come up zero, however when I got back to Makai Pier at 1030 I found Makana waiting for me at the left end of the Middle Cliff . He would later move down, allowing the ID, and remained all day. He was the one and only RI resident today.

Team Billand spent the morning with their WhaleWatcher hats on, however Robert snuck away long enough to find RO28 at Maili Point at 0925.  They found R018 at Kalaeloa Campgrounds at 1357.

Dera called at 1250 with the report of RI37 at Shark's Cove today.  Dera called again at 1357 to report a probable Rocky at Diamond Head. Colleen sent confirming photos

1-28-11 DB Dailies

At 0841 I found Kolohe doing 10 minute dives at Spitting Cave.  On my 2nd look at Rabbit Island at 0948 I found Makana up in the grass at the back of Rocky Right Beach. He would later move down, allowing the ID.

Team Billand checked in ate 0755 with the report of R018 at Maili Pt.  At 0902 they found Kermit fronting #1708 at White Plains.

Dera called at 1045 to advise that Joanne Pettigrew had found an animal at Shark's Cove. Dana called at 1333 to advise that the RI37 ID had been confirmed.  At 1127 Dera called with the report of an animal in Hauula. Photos from Ella & Dave Siroskey would confirm the R5AY ID.

Lesley called at 1830 to say that she was watching (in the dark) 2 critters swimming and foraging off of China Walls (near Spitting Cave). ID was impossible, but since Kolohe was at SC today, I'd say he was one. Shots were attempted so I'll let you know what the outcome is, if possible.
