02/05/2020 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Team T&D and Melody.

Team T&D are still enjoying themselves on Molokai. They had such a good time yesterday they decided to do it again today even pushing themselves further. Their first find was a U/M. Their best educated guess based on male belly, size, location and newly molted it could be RN06.

Next there was RL62, she was hauling out just as they arrived. She settled in pretty much the same spot as yesterday.

Then there were two seal on some flats. RL64 was an easy ID by the visible tags. The second seal was an UU until they checked in with Diane and she was able to ID RJ08. Nice work!
To make things even more exciting was a humpback mom and calf playing not more than 100 yards off shore!

A little further next set of flats they spotted a very large seal, but no ID could be made.
After that was a RL68 on a small sandy beach. And lastly they saw RK92.

Team Billand headed over to Paradise Cove before 6 am. Benny was way up and as the sun kind of came out he entered the water went up the channel where Pohaku and Nanea would go.  Benny turned around and came back to the cove only to head out to sea.

Team Billand arrived at the outfall at 8:30 and spotted two seals foraging and fighting. Lo and behold one of them was Benny and the other was Kalani RN14. A third seal was too far away to get and ID.
Benny and Kalani took off from the outfall and headed over to a nearby beach, arguing the entire way. They almost landed, but they were too busy fighting and kept going until they were out of sight.

Team Billand spotted another seal coming into the outfall. Here comes RH32 Ka'ale stealing lots of fish.
Kalani came back into the outfall once again. But Team Billand stayed for a bit and then headed out to check other locations.

Over at a westside location they found Lefty RG28 alone on the rocks snoozing.  Kalua RL20 was on lower rocks and Kekoa RK72 was to the right in the seal inlet.
R3CU was on lower rocks along with R3CX Nalu. Holokai RG40 was on the right water front rocks.

Melody received a call about 1:30 from a friend who was on the beach about to sit on a log and noticed that a seal was laying next to it. LOL bet she had a mini heart-attack.  Melody called security to take the signs over and they set up the SRA.  When Melody arrived she was able to make a positive ID Rocky RN58 by her CC scar on right shoulder, and natural bleach on her right fore flipper. Melody called the hotline to inform.

Rocky did not make it up to her morning glories maybe due to the beach erosion. So she snuggled up to the log using it for scratching her face and back.  Melody did a lot of outreach as lots of people were arriving to watch the storm roll in. Quite a few had never seen a monk seal, which is always fun to share the monk seal 101 basics. Melody left after 7 pm and Rocky was still hugging the log.
