10/12/2010 Live... Local.... Late... Breaking News

Aloha from The Marine Mammal Center.

Was doing my daily check of the cellphone tag and was surprised to see the new map from Maka'iwi (female monk seal tagged on the west end of Oahu)! I saw on my last check that it looked like she may have left Oahu for a little excursion but I only had one location so wasn't sure. Maka'iwi is spending some time on the east end of Molokai. Will keep you all posted on what she is doing. The map represents her movements from Oct 5 - Oct 10.

Cheers,
Charles

Oh my GOSH...I hope she moves from that area, its where R019 got killed. But she is a mover, hopefully she doesnt stay long here. Makaiwi has this habit, if she likes the area, she will stay for 4 to 7 days. No wonder we cant find her at all....we been looking since the Oct 5th..last seen at the Campbells area, snoozing away. I will miss that little girl, she is always in my heart and soul...FOREVER!!!!! She has this spirit that grew on us from day one. We met her at Hau Bush..tiny, skinny, very green and bleached VO2. We had many hours to observe her..she is a cutie. Come back soon sweet little girl...we'll be looking, we'll be waiting for ya. Flipper hugs to ya. Diane...can you find her for me???? Take plenty pics, ok??????? Yoohooo!!!!! Diane and friends...let us know if ya see her. Thanks!!!!!! Bless you all. B

OOOPSSS, forgot to thank Charles for the map of Makaiwi's travels. Now we can stop looking for her at this beach she hung out...this beach got so much litter all over the place. Glad she moved on from there.
I sure appreciate the MAP DOC and thanks E.

Don't worry Barbara. Just got an email from Cheryl on Kahoolawe and Makaiwi is hauled up at the base camp. Can't wait for her to get back near a cell tower!

Oh no, we missed her or rather she missed us. It would have been great had she stayed here for the count on Saturday!!!
Thanks so much for the info Charles, it's just so interesting. I am on my way to La'au right now but I may have to spend more time around the point towards the east.
Hugs from Molokai,
Di

Dr. Charles, your fans want to see Ua Malie's maps... Volunteers just want to know what she is up to when she's out of site, also they are looking at winding down the schedule.

WE LOVE the iMAPS.... just another layer of a monk seals life.

Makaiwi has been hanging around Makalawena Beach on the Big Island for the past few days. Spotted her at the entrance of Makalawena, she was sunning herself, snoozing in the san. She was rolling around in the sand, scratching her belly. She is a beautiful girl.

UPDATED

We spotted VO2 this morning on the NW end of Kona at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.

She was seen beached on the sandy shore and waved at the crowd that gathered to see the amazing animal. The staff at the 4 seasons roped off the area to keep guests away from VO2.

If you would like to see photos and more info check out TheAdventuresOfRickyD.blogspot.com

I will post info as soon as possible. Most likely by the end of the day today.

I returned to the beach an hour later and was able to film VO2 leaving the beach. If I can i'll post some video to my blog.

OH WONDERFUL! We love hearing about V02. Her orange tags on rear flipper should read 4DE/4DF. By any chance did you get a picture?
Maka'iwi come home, er... well come back to Oahu for a visit :-)

V02 was at the south end of Kiholo Bay today where she gently nudged two sunning turtles off the rocks where she wanted to sun :) She had been sunning for awhile when yet another turtle approached the same area to sun. As if to compromise, V02 allowed the turtle to sun mostly out of the water, but not quite all the way up on the rocks.
