8/16/2010 Nothing could be keener than to be a Weaner....

Day 48 of Mom and Pup.... it appears R5AY left about 10:30 AM for a swim and didn't return.... during the course of the day Ua Malie went for a swim and was seen eating and seemingly not concerned about Mom's departure...  Now the real work begins by keeping this weaner out of harms way and away from any curiosity about people.  Thank you Diane for the last shots of Mom and Pup together.  Also check out the YouTube footage.

Mahalos to all you loyal volunteers that helped watch after Ua'Malie all these weeks. She is a beautiful example of monk seal success and is doing well so far. Keep up the good work, we ain't done yet.

From what I understand, R5AY left for the last time around 2PM.

Ua Malie, stay away from people who mean you harm and people who don't mean you harm as well!

R5AY was such a good mom. She had to put up with a demanding little princess who always wanted her way. In the end she was just skin and bones. It was definitely time for her to go.

R5AY disappeared about 8AM and I thought she had taken off for good. Ua Malie was calling out and she came back slowly and then presented herself so the pup could feed. Pup was not happy with the location because the waves were hitting them and she was voicing her displeasure. That's when I started the video of the mom and pup smack down. Pup got her way in the end and that's the first time I saw R5AY let her win. Definitely time to go.

In checking logs today at the site, Mom did leave around 2:30PM not to return. However, today, Aug 17th, Ua;Maile seems perfectly happy terrorizing any fish or sea cucumber that gets in her way. She had me running up and down beaches for about 800 yds each way, in and out of haul outs and discovering her own flippers and lots of other interesting things. Was such a pleasure to watch. She is very fascinated with herself and other things, and then gets quite pooped and flops out. Lesley has some good shots and I'm sure will share when she has a chance. Was a great day at Turtle Bay with this new addition to our Ohana.
